Typos mean nothing if you have a nice essay and good grades and ec's to back it up, admission's officers have some humanity in them and they'll understand.

I made a typo on my Stanford Application and got in...

My DD had a typo in cut-and-paste essays that she sent to Harvard and Stanford. She was accepted to both of these schools.

TransferStudent: you make a good point which I agree with, HOWEVER,

FYI for your future info, and since we're talking about typos:

Admission's officers = possessive (i.e. belonging to the admissions)-this is the grammatically incorrect usage
Admissions officers = plural (i.e. more than one admission) this is the proper usage

As you can see, I'm anal and putting apostrophes where they don't belong is one of my pet peeves.

I got into Penn, Columbia, Northwestern, Emory, Middlebury, and Colgate with a few contractions in my essay (isn't, doesn't, etc.) And I mistakenly forgot to put that I ran Outdoor Track on my ECs, but it does say, on that empty line that i won a medal in the 4x400 relay.

Do things like the contractions hurt my application or the admissions board's view of me?

Don't worry about it. They see the BIG picture. I made lots of mistakes and still got into my #1 school.

LOL no...I got in EA to Yale, and I was showing a curious junior my online supplement two weeks ago, and realised l had a really stupid, obvious typo in my supplemental essay. We both cracked up b/c it looked so dumb, but I guess it didn't hurt my decision. Don't worry about it :-)

This is what happened to me. TRUE STORY!!!!!!!!!!

Vanderbilt Application:

I was writing about music, and how much it was a part of my life. Then i started talking about the city of Nashville... Here is what i wrote in one sentence:

Nashville itself is a

Now, what i meant to put was:
Nashville itself is a center for music across the world, etc etc

However, beacuse I forgot to proofread that essay/ too tired/ just stressed out/ waiting to the last minute (11:47 PM to be exact), I didnt fix the glaring error.

Decision???
Accepted.

You should be fine.

I think it is not that bad to have a typo on the application but you should avoid it. Typos are usually signs of procrastination or hurry and ... well colleges do not like this. But I don't think this is a reason to reject one applicant and admit another one who doesn't have a typo

but why wouldn't you run spell check and have someone else proof-read it for you? it sure wouldn't help you to have errors on your app, IMHO

(yes I know I didn't capitalize!)

Well...if you're writing your essay, say, very close to deadline, there might not be time in between finishing at 11:55 and having to submit at 12:00. Or, that could just be me.

At any rate, I got into several great schools with typos, and a few of my applications were actually sent in late as well.

Actually SpringfieldMom it's "admissions' officers" since they are officers of the admissions. Anyway, it was not only puerile, but rude to corect me in the first place and try to make me feel stupid since that was totally off topic. Please don't be immature and continue this argument either. Once again though, typos really don't mean anything if they understand what you're saying, unless you call them the wrong school or something. Like imagine calling your wife the wrong name or something, it's like that. Small mistake won't have any weight though. I know a kid that got into Brown with some really elementary mistakes, and his grades weren't anything amazing either, but he had the total package.

Hi! I just sent my application in for U of M, and I realized a typo. The sentence reads:

I would love the opportunity to stay in this unique city and finally walk into the buildings I have often so passed.

It should have read, I have so often passed.

Is it really bad? Will it affect my chances?

Thank you! I am so nervous!

i accidentally typed âitsâ instead of âitâsâ ⊠even after editing my essay for like 50 hrs. will i be rejected from harvard immediately?
You certainly might be rejected but it wonât be because of a typo.
MODERATORâS NOTE:
Closing thread. This one is from 2007, and the question has been asked probably a hundred times in the last month alone. If colleges rejected every applicant with a typo, they would not be able to fill their class.
Chill. Read the âclam fartâ thread here. He was accepted.
