Do UC schools give much need-based aid to OOS students?

Would love to add UCLA and Berkeley to S2's list of schools to consider. However financial aid will be very important to us. Considering he would be an OOS student is this unrealistic to expect given the financials of UC schools right now?

Yes, it is unrealistic to expect financial aid in your situation. The only public colleges that meet need for out of state students are UVA and UNC.

Keep an eye on AccessUVa. The Board of Visitors may be making some changes.

note: edit to add quote by college_ruled to clarify I was responding to post #2. Thanks shrinkrap!

^I’m confused. Is there some reciprocal relationship between California and Virginia brewing?

Oh, I see. You are responding to post #2.

^ ? Shrinkrap I have hs graduation brainfog this weekend. I’m not following you. :o I just posted it because UVa was mentioned as meeting need. I had just read this morning about a possible change.

note: You’re right…I should have quoted what I was responding to so you could follow. I wasn’t clear, sorry! I fixed it now.

Not likely to get much in the way of aid OOS for UCB or UCLA. S1 was offered Presidential scholarship from UCSC (OOS), but that’s only 20K over 4 years. Not enough to make a big dent in the 200K total over 4 yrs. There is also a merit award called the Regent Scholarship available at the UC’s. I know that UCSB and UCSC have given a good share of these awards to OOS. They are 6K per year and renewable for all yrs. I don’t know much about the need based aid for OOS, but it sounds like not much according to info. above.

The UCs do not guarantee to meet financial need for any student. There is some decent need based funding for instate CA residents in the form of the Cal Grants. BUT these are not awarded to OOS students at all.

The likelihood of your student getting significant need based aid as an OOS student at a UC is very small. Their first obligation is to the students who are residents of CA. Even those students are taking a hit as the state of CA is having significant financial issues.

If your student is applying to a UC, the most they are guaranteed to receive is what they would be eligible in federally funded need based aid…Pell Grant if eligible (EFC below $5500) and stafford loan. Those would be a drop in the bucket towards the OOS costs of attending a UCLA or UCB.

Here are a couple of links for you, cbug.

CBUG…

Most of UC financial aid is very much tied to being a Calif resident because of Cal Grants - which only Calif students can get. this has always been the case…not just since Calif has had money problems.

The UCs have never been able to meet the need of Calif students…so they certainly can’t help out non-residents whose costs are a LOT higher.

Keep in mind that OOS publics charge high OOS costs for a reason. It wouldn’t make much sense to charge high OOS costs…and then just cover them with need-based aid.

Most OOS publics cannot give much OOS need based aid. UNC and UVA are exceptions…but they also don’t accept many OOS kids.

However, some OOS publics do give great merit scholarships for stats.

What are your son’s test scores?

Just repeating what a lot of others have said. Last summer when I went to the financial aid seminar at Parents Orientation at UCLA, the “financial aid guy”, said that they only give aid to OOS up to the in-state tuition price. ANd that it was the same if California kids went OOS.

*up to the in-state tuition *

LOL…that’s like a Pell Grant and a student loan…that is “up to” the instate tuition rate. But, yes, that is pretty much the deal
