Do UChicago students stand a good chance entering Harvard Medical School?

Also, which major would preferable, Bio Sciences of Physics? Any personal stories or behind the scenes facts?

^ i have the same question! also, any statistic is welcome

I swear to God I saw a statistics about this somewhere, and UChicago didn’t look too good. But I can’t find the statistics :(

I think a lot of the poor med school placement rate is that chicago attracts more pre-PhD or wall street type applicants and less pre-med type applicants. They don’t publish the med school (or law school) placement rates online because they aren’t that good. You have to go ask for them. You can be a pre-med at chicago and be perfectly fine, though. It’s not like these statistics automatically apply to you.

It isn’t the best place for pre-meds as far as fluff classes for inflating the GPA. Really, if you work hard, you can get the GPA and test scores you need for med school. It won’t be handed to you, though. Try reading the food for thought thread… there are some “fluff” type classes listed in one of the comments. Personally, I don’t believe in fluff classes, but that’s me.

You have to remember that you aren’t a statistic. Your choices will make you different form everyone else, and if you make choices that target you towards HMS, then you can get there. It might take a lot of work, but it’s not like the adcom will see chicago and automatically reject you. It’s more like they’ll think that’s impressive and move on the actually reading your application. It’s not like going to Yale or some other ivy is automatically going to get you into HMS either. You have to work hard for it, and the particular institution isn’t going to make all that much difference. You are the one who makes the difference.

That said, if you feel strongly that one school will give you an advantage over another, you might want to go with your gut feeling. I really think that chicago can help you with any career, and you really can’t go wrong if you are choosing among the top schools in terms of getting into grad or med school. I would try to go with how you feel about the schools and how the finances work in before trying to use the school to plan out the rest of your life.

Go with your gut. That’s really the only way you can feel good about your choice. Chicago gives me warm fuzzies. Does it give you warm fuzzies? That’s the real question.

and really, who “stands a good chance” at harvard med? it’s a reach for everyone. just like applying to harvard undergrad. All you can do is your best, and hope!

Thanks, kitkatkatie. I had the same question/worries about pre-med at Chicago, but I’m just getting excited to go there now, so it shouldn’t make a significant difference.

If you look at published stats, the only ones that statistically have a better time getting into HMS are Harvard College grads. Strange but true.

Consider though that in 4 more years, your perspective on the issue will change.

I’m reminded of what the top grad from HMS and the bottom grad from Temple have in common: They are both called “Doctor”…
