I applied to both schools with a relatively low gpa, but I have an internship and research, both related to my major. do they even care?

Yes, but not as much as GPA and Personal Statements.

No, they dont care. The UCs realize that transfer students have other priorities (like work).

yah Ec activities they dont really care for transfer students... (90% of the time)

I wouldn't say that they don't care. I would say that it isn't something they look for.
I think if you had done some really amazing volunteer work it will help you but if you have something not so great it won't matter as much. For example my friend volunteered in Sri Lanka after the hurricane and flooding disaster and I'm betting that will definitely score more points then volunteering at a local library.

hah, my volunteer work is more than working at a library, but way less than working in Sri Lanka.

my friend did not do any EC but got in to Cal!

By EC, would working part-time while in CC count?

I'm in high school right now so would you recommend I start doing some community service hours to use as EC in my application when I transfer?

Yes but do them once you start attending your CC --- becuase then they count for something. Working is not a EC but it is a different category on the applicaiton.

So they don't count CS hours for when your in high school and only while you're attending CC? My brother applied to transfer this month I believe and his only EC were from CS hours from high school and he said it was OK to use.

You can list back to 9th grade, but the adcoms most likely won't give them a second thought.

by ECs, i meant working in this lab with a professor. that must count for something, or at least i hope so.

UCLA cares about overcoming hardships and adversity and work from transfers wayyy more than ECs.

So it is highly recommended that I do my CS hours while I'm in CC and not while I'm in high school? And how many hours is recommended? I heard anywhere from 100 to 120 hours is good. UCLA is my number one choice.

I would prefer to get it done while I'm still in high school as I expect to be pretty busy with studying and work while I'm in CC.

jfk--the whole point of volunteer work as a college student is that your doing something meaningful...not just something to "Get done" its different from high school beacuse ec's matter more for h.s. students...
I don't know what you plan on studying but if you can try to do something within that field.
It won't hurt you if you don't do CS but it won't really help you unless its something related to your field/something you care about/etc. you would have an opportunity to write about it in the personal statement...

ok so guyy--sorry i misread your post yah i think they will care they you did internship/research within your field.

If you do not work or have other responsibilities I would believe that it is pretty important to have EC's. For the most part only you will only need EC's for UCLA and Berkeley. These schools want the people they accept to be able to contribute to the academic atmosphere of the campuses and will be involved with the school more than just taking classes. EC's are a great way to show this.
