Me and my best friend will be rooming together this Fall at UF and we had planned to use a wireless router to network our PC's together (we each have a desktop and a laptop) and to share a single laser printer. But from reading the UF network use information it sounds like they prohibit routers. Can this really be true? I would expect lots of students to have routers set up ...

i dont think they prohibit them.. it says on the DHNet site that if you get access in your room thats great but if you dont you have to find other means. I was thinking about getting a wireless router if i dont get wireless in my room. What dorm are you in?

I'll be in Hume.

Here is the wording I found about routers:

"The user is not allowed to share her/his RJ45 Ethernet port with more than one computer/device at the same time. This prohibition includes any use of hubs, switches, wireless access points, routers, etc. which would permit the user to connect more than one computer/device to the RJ45 Ethernet port and share the port with others or herself/himself. Exceptions to this rule may be granted by DHNet Network Services for the purposes of supporting an academic need, if network availability would not be affected."

man, that does sound sort of harsh. but the way you said it, theres gonna be a lot of computers in your room and one printer, so maybe you can get it waved? I would call. The housing people are pretty friendly.

good luck!
