I was wondering how often students go to DC. I understand that it's about a 30min trip by car, but that seems well beyond reasonable walking distance, so I was unsure if students actually go back and forth to DC. Are there any transportation services offered by the school, or nearby that go back and forth from CP to DC? If so, about how long is the bus/shuttle/train(?) ride? I have been to DC several times before, and I really like the city, so I feel that it would be nice to go to school so close to the city, but only if it's feasible to continually go back and forth.

I realize that many students probably utilize internship opportunities in DC, but what about just daily life things, like restaurants, night life, etc.?

Note: The ability to continually visit DC is not a deal breaker for me. If it turns out not to be as easily accessible as I had hoped, I would not cross UMD off my list. Just mentioning it so people don't get the wrong idea.

If anyone has any input, that would be great. Thanks.

UMD has shuttle service that takes you from the campus to the College Park metro station. I think some kids go to DC on the weekends but not on daily basis unless you have a job and/or an internship downtown.

I can’t comment on how often they go to DC, but I can comment about transportation.

There’s a bus run by the school that goes to the College Park metro stop and UMD and back. From the metro stop, it probably takes 30-40 minutes to get to DC. Very easy, very accessible. IIRC (but I might be wrong) the metro stops running a little earlier than preferable, so nightlife might be hindered.

The reason I applied to UMD was because of proximity to DC (and because DC schools all sucked at need-based and merit aid and I thought I might be able to get some merit at UMD).

My son and his friends go into DC once or twice a month, sometimes more often depending on what acts are in town. they like the restaurants and bar scene, as well, in DC more than in CP. And then there are all the federal and NPC internships that are available in DC. A very cool advantage of UMD and DC unis.

My daughter and her friends go to DC when ever their schedules allow. The bus takes them right to the Metro. Last week when the school was closed due to bad weather, they went to DC…and they walked to the Metro because there was no bus service! So…for those who wish to take advantage of the close proximity to the city, it’s very easy to do.

I’m glad to hear that a lot of students do indeed go to DC often. I knew that it wouldn’t be possible to go every day and such, but I’m glad to hear that DC is very accessible.

It’s a great city for college students because so much of it is free. You can go to some of the best art and history museums as many times as you like for free. It’s great for the low budgeted.
