If you were to transfer to a school like UCLA for example, and you had like a 3.9 GPA from college, would they care if that GPA was from a school like the University of Washington over a school like Arizona State University? Or would they see those grades as the same?
For those particular schools I dont think it would make a difference
The chances of getting in to a school like UCLA is not very high. The vast majority of their transfer slots are allocated to CCC graduates.
UCLA and other California publics prioritize students from community colleges in transfer admissions.
Ok perhaps I wasn’t very clear with my use of examples. Let’s say you wanted to transfer into a good school. Lets say you had a 3.9 GPA. Would that “good school” care if that GPA was from a pretty decent school over a mediocre school? Would they give it more weight or see them as the same?
The quality of school you are transferring from is going to be important. That’s not to say that it’s more difficult to transfer from a weaker school (within reason obviously transferring from Harvard is going to be easier than ASU) but you have to compensate with performance. As Washington is a stronger school a 3.8 there is equivalent to a 3.9 at ASU for example. Because ASU is an easier school a student who had a 3.8 at Washington should with the same amount of effort be able to get a 3.9 at ASU, making him/her competitive with the other student. Those numbers are completely invented and the schools may have a larger or smaller gap but I hope you get the overarching concept.
