Minnesota has a great ChemE for undergrads and grads.
Ranked 4th in the US News for undergrads.

Yes. 10 char

What is it that makes it good? The classes are very similar to most other undergraduate programs that I've seen.

Would it be considered as good as Northwestern or Case Western's programs?

ChemE at the U is better than NU's or Case's ChemE programs. What makes it better? That's a good question, probably the research and recruitment after graduation. Hopefully someone actually in the field or program can come along and give you better answers.

^
So, does anyone have any specific/anecdotal answers?

The ChemE department at UMN has been the center of chemical engineering for over 50 years. The depertment hires top faculty from all over the world, the level of both graduate and undergraduate students is as high as it can get and their class are tough. The atmosphere in the department is very friendly, professors are approachable, all administrators are very helpful and the Labs are fully equipped. The only thing you have to care about is your studies. Every year top chemical engineering companies (BP, Dow, ExxonMobil, Lily, 3M etc.) are coming to the department for recruiting and good students have priority entering any other graduate program in the US.

Going there this fall

Ansrox, my son is seriously considering going there this fall 2011 for chemical engineering from the sunshine California, never expereriencing snow. Would you kindly share your peronal experience there about school and/or the major. Thanks.

Or any of you out there attending UofM in 3rd or 4th year. Greatly appreciate your input.

Yeah I’m leaning towards committing. It is a perfect fit!

My S is seriously considering ChemE at Minnesota. So far all the reports about their ChemE have been very positive. S will be attending Dean’s showcase for science & engineering next Week and will take a tour of the department. I guess seeing is believing!

The campus is beautiful. I’m sure you will enjoy your visit.

Has your son decided yet?
MN has been a top school in Chem Engineering for a long time; I have a PhD in a related field (Chemical Physics) from MN, and had ChemEng students in some of the graduate-level classes. They were no slouches: whatever your son wants to do in ChemEng, MN will challenge him.
On the downside, coming from California: it will be cold. Three weeks ago it was 13 degrees on my drive into work (admittedly a cold snap). We’re going to have a dusting of snow tonight into tomorrow.
On the upside, the campus is quite beautiful in the spring, and it is located in Minneapolis, there is plenty to do, shopping, restaurants, Mall of America, Vikings, Twins.
And our Minnesota blondes are natural blondes (Norwegian, Swedish, German).
Good luck to your son, whatever decision he makes!

i am a current chemE junior at UMinn…the faculty being friendly is only partially true…some of them can be really rude for no reason…the program is intense…good but very demanding…atmosphere is extremely competitive…you will be spending most of your time in the lounge doing homework.

How was your son experienced at UMinn since my boy is same as your from ca? Is it easy to get an internship?
