Sophomore year, I received a C in Algebra II as a final grade, and it remains my only grade on my transcript which isn't an A... in Trig and Pre-Cal, I received an A-, and then in AP Calculus, I'm anticipating a high A (A+) - does this partially redeem my lousy performance in Alg II?

(I know a high grade now doesn't really expunge lousy ones, but does it help? The C in Algebra II was due in part to my mother being hospitalized for an extended period of time and this will be explained by my GC)

Well, my grades Sophomore year were all A’s (A+'s in APUSH, English 10, and Chem) - the only issue was Alg II and my GC is going to say something I presume.

What school are you aiming for? If it’s Harvard, well competition is steep even for straight A students, let alone if you get even one C.
IMO one C won’t kill you. They’ve seen thousands of transcripts where grades improved over the years, whether that’s from lack of trying, maturity, etc.

“It’s probably just gonna look like you weren’t trying. I can’t see that as good. Unless you have your guidance counselor say something.”

It’s not a big deal. But I’m not a big CC user, so maybe I’m not accustomed to the “A or fail” mindset.

if you do well in more difficult classes, then the c obviously wouldn’t be the result of lack of competence. and explaining that it wasn’t laziness, but family issues, would have to make a difference.

Well, I have an upward trend across the board, because I got A+'s in Honors classes and even higher A+'s in in AP levels of those courses - like an 97 in English 10 Honors, and then a 98 in AP English the next year, but that’s a pretty slight “upward trend” I guess.
