How much do volunteer hours really matter? I know people who have over 500 hours while others have 100 hours and some people have nearly none. How much do colleges really look at it?

Collegeboard reports that a lot of schools consider the volunteer work. If you’ve stuck with a certain project or dedicated a lot of time to something, that will (probably) work in your favor. It’s not important as GPA, test scores, rank, extracurricular activities or the like, though they do definitely consider it.

About volunteer hours…
I haven’t done ANY last year (freshman). I was wondering does tutoring count as volunteer hours?

They should count. Although, unless you’re required to get a certain amount through school, if you’re talking about college applications you can just put down that you were a tutor.

Hopefully not :l I have only about 25… but I have a great SAT/ACT score, and ECs so I’m hoping it will cancel out.

As many of the experts around here will tell you, simply racking up volunteer hours does not impress any of the selective universities. 25 hours won’t; 750 hours won’t. However, colleges want to see that you constructively use your time, and volunteering is one way to do that. Gaining a leadership role, starting your own events, using a unique talent to help others, and dedicating yourself to a single project/cause are ways to impress colleges with your volunteer work.

Can’t be too much, I reported none. Still got into three really good schools.

Yes they matter. The bigger question is, do they matter to you?

I’m not sure about colleges but I’ve been told by teachers and librarians that they made a great way to get some extra scholarships made to volunteers.

I think the number doesn’t matter, but if you are actually devoted to it. I LOVE to volunteer where I do. I have way over 1,000. I hope colleges don’t look at the number but most likely the rec I will get from my supervisor or an essay I most likely will write about it.

Urgh…

Volunteering IS a EC
