Do Wash U transfers get on-campus housing?

Does anyone know what the deal is?

When do we find out? What are our odds? what have they done in the years prior?

Usually transfers are able to get on-campus housing. However, a good number of students find off-campus living less expensive. Also, Wash U has a shuttle that picks up students in the immediate area (a mile or two from campus). It's very efficient and enables one to get to campus easily. The shuttle connects Barnes Jewish Hospital (Washington University's teaching hospital) with the other campuses, as well as the Central West End and areas around the north side of Forest Park.

In case any other WashU transfers missed the housing info sessions this past weekend, I'll bump this thread with the answer:

In terms of available on-campus housing, there are some doubles left, and that is about it. Even of that variety, there are more transfer students than rooms available. If you were sent a housing form by them, you can get a double. If not, you can get on the waitlist.

However, there is little reason to bother living on campus. Quadrangle runs the Waterman house, which is two blocks from campus, and will serve transfer students exclusively. It is a complex of 2 and 3 bedroom (all with one person per room) apartments that have private bathrooms and kitchens. And they're about $3k less than the remaining doubles on campus.

There's another Quadrangle complex that is has nicer rooms, but is about twice the cost, and is generally deemed to be too far from campus to be a valid option if one does not have a car.

gprime, thanks for sharing that info. Do you know how they determined which transfers got housing forms and which got put on the waitlist? Did they give any indication of the timeline involved here? I am on the housing waitlist and I don't know how long I am supposed to wait. I have tried to contact various offices, but no one is very helpful. One more thing, at the meeting did they talk about meal plans for (presumably off-campus) transfers?

A lot of transfers HAVE gotten on-campus housing already. I, for some reason, have not.

49Mercury, I believe the determination was based on either when your application was processed and the decision rendered. But I'm not 100% certain, as it was mentioned only in passing on one occassion. Regarding housing, for transfers the wait is to be much longer, and not knowing for another couple of weeks is to be expected if your goal was on-campus. What I'm presently concerned with is the off-campus housing. I sent in my stuff a couple of days ago and have gotten no sort of confirmation. I'll probably try calling tomorrow, since I'd like to be certain I've got my room secured.

Regarding the meal plan question, all off campus students are still required to purchase a mealplan, though you do not have to buy a full one. They offer smaller, cheaper ones. If memory serves, it was only really mentioned on the housing form, and even then not in any detail. I looked them up on the WashU website to see which made the most sense to buy.

I would bear in mind a couple of things. First, which you would have a "kitchen" off campus, it only includes a fridge and an oven/stove. No microwave, no dishwasher, ect. Second, you'll only be a couple of blocks from campus, and thus would not have a problem eating there. So it might be worth getting a full meal plan rather than the minimal option available to off-campus students.

gprime, when you say you sent in your stuff a couple of days ago, to whom/which office did you send it to? I can even determine which office or which person is in charge of transfer housing.

I emailed it to Sandi @ Quadrangle, since she told me during transfer weekend to secure my housing in that way.

IsleBoy, with whom should I communicate in order to try to get on-campus housing, i.e., who is REALLY in charge of these decisions? Do transfers have a better chance of getting housed on the North Campus or on the South 40? Which off-campus housing unit is considered the best?

Schmoo102, have you learned anything new about housing? I, too, am waiting and kinda perplexed by the process. How long are we just supposed to wait?
