Do we accept work study and loan if we may not have to use them?

Today is the deadline for S to accept the work study and loan parts of his financial aid package from U of Miami. Most likely, he will not have to use them because the FL incentive scholarship will fill the gap. Does he still have to accept those just in case?

Thanks for any help you can provide

If he wants to take an on-campus job, having work study eligibility can allow him chances or preference at more of them, since the on-campus jobs are likely to prefer work study students (whose pay is subsidized by the work study program).

Do you know if he has to accept work study today if he most likely will not need it? That’s our issue. This is our first time doing all of this and he should be getting enough grants and scholarships to cover everything. We are wondering if he should accept just to be on the safe side.

It doesn’t hurt to accept the work study and then not use it if he doesn’t need it. He can also turn down the federal loans but ask for them later if he does need them.

He may decide he wants to work. If so, work study jobs are on campus, and usually have some flexibility for the students. I would accept the work study awards. If he doesn’t find or look for a job, he won’t get the money. But he may want to work to earn some of his spending money.

Re: the loan. If you don’t need it, don’t take it. As noted, he can always take it later in the school year if needed.
