I'm kind of lost...like one of my classes has a LOT of books and do I bring those with me to the first day of class or do we go to the first day of class empty-handed?

Do most students bring their books to class?

Do most students bring their books to class?

I would like to know too. Does that mean if we have stacked classes, do we bring textbooks for all of those classes as well?

For classes like poli sci and history, I always went to lecture empty-handed but I would bring the main textbook to the discussion. If the class you're talking about is english (one where the bookstore lists like a gazillion books for), I wouldn't bring any books on the first day since there's no telling which novel/play/etc you're going to read first.
I'm not a science major, so I don't know about science classes.

What about for math classes? Do we generally bring a notebook for the lecture, and the textbook for the discussion?

just a notebook

^Depends on what you like. I liked to bring my textbook to discussions so I could remind myself of formulae and stuff.

But generally one does not bring a textbook to a lecture?

Again, depends on whether or not YOU feel like you'll need the textbook during lecture. Probably not, but different profs have different styles.

Most (~85%) of the people just bring notebooks.

from an engineering standpoint, i have never brought a book to lecture. for discussions, though, you often use your books.
