Do We Care?

Well, people have said that our generation is the most apathetic... ever. So: how do you feel about issues like the Iraq War, genocide in Sudan, Abortion Ban in South Dakota, Gay Marriage, and anything else that apparently, 30 years ago, our parents would have been up in arms about?

Meh... I'm indifferent ;)

Iraq War- we have to get the hell outta there.

Abortion Ban in SD - It's South Dakota. What do you expect? Idiocy!

Gay Marriage - what's the big deal? Grant gay people the right to a civil marriage and stop crapping yourself - gay people aren't any different and they're not gonna suck out your soul!

Genocide in Sudan - I didn't know there was any. Sorry! :(

I'm concerned but lack the drive to get totally worked up. I think our generation is jaded because the government has made us all lose hope that anything good, anything that works properly, exists in the US today.

Of course we care.

We're just a little more lazy than we are outraged.

It's a shame.

Iraq: thank you George Bush, for wasting over 500 billion dollars that could have helped sustain social security and medicaid.

Darfur: the U.N. has successfully become ignorant of tihs issue, a geniune tragedy.

Abortion ban: lets nuke SD, once we get the 10 people that live thereo utta there.

gay marriage: i am a social liberal. nuf said.

we can thank the rise of mass media directed at teens for this, i think, and the general decline of the quality of education in public schools.
believe it or not, but there really used to be a time when the stuff taught in schools was actually relevant.

The only thing people around me truly care about is the possiblity of the draft being reinstated (the guys in particular, of course), but that really scares me.

I support gay marriage if both chicks are hot.

I hope you're joking. ;)

(No, really. I do!)

i totally forgot about that.
figures, we only care about things that affect us.

still, i am totally anti-draft.
bush couldnt do it in his last term because there'd be no way he'd get elected if he did, but this is his last term and he's got nothing to lose this time.

Yes, most American teens don't even know, nor care, about what's going on around the world. I'm in seventh grade and I have more knowledge of world events than some of you do. Pathetic.

Iraq War - We need to leave. It was a mistake going in there in the first place. First, our motive was to get rid of nuclear weapons, then it changed to "Take down Saddam!", and now it's... I don't know what.. Rebuild Iraq/Try to establish a democracy/ fight the terrorists/ etc. etc. etc.

Genocide in Sudan - Sad, and it's definately a problem, but we have too many things on our hands to start fighting another war.

Abortion Ban in South Dakota - I think women should have the right to abort a pregnancy under some circumstances.

Gay Marriage - Disgusting. Immoral. Wrong. Eww. Sick. Gross.

we care ...ALOT.

"Gay Marriage - Disgusting. Immoral. Wrong. Eww. Sick. Gross."

reasoning?

He's a 7th grader. He probably hasn't encountered a lot of gay people. Personally, I think it's sad that people can be so ignorant about that subject. Gay people don't choose to be gay, they just are. Some of my best friends are gay, and I don't think that makes them bad people. That's just the kid's immaturity speaking.

Agreed, if you don't use Biblical reasoning to define morals, I have no idea how you'd think being gay is immorral. Besides, this kid hasn't hit puberty which means most of his peers wouldn't have come out yet anyways meaning he has no bearing on what its like to be gay.

I believe that our generation is jaded because our nation's leaders (namely our presidents) have never been people you could truly live up to while we were growing up.

I mean, how many people do you know say that they want to grow up to be just like George W. Bush?

Iraq War- A mistake to go in there - but we have to remain in there for the long term now (if not with the same amount of troops we have employed there now). We have to majorly focus on changing Iraqis perception towards the USA - I could talk for hours on it but thats my basic view.

Abortion Ban in SD - Its really, really sad. States with lower average incomes need abortions the most. I hope this gets overturned somehow - hopefully more women will get into politics in there.

Gay Marriage - Strongly in favor of - I think denying it is simply discrimination - I can see no other reasons why anyone would object to it.

Genocide in Sudan - A problem, sure, but Iraq and Afghanistan have made it politically impossible for America to get involved militarily. Other armed forces (NATO, perhaps) need to step up to the plate and do what needs to be done even if it goes against the current pacifist public opinion.

I'm not sure teens are all that apathetic nowadays, but increased apathy is arguably justified. Iraq simply isn't 'Nam in the 60s so it is only natural that the youth will be less strongly against it. Also, as the children of the 'hippie' generation, rebellion from our parents often means conformity to society and thus rebellious teens do not necessarily rebel against society and challenge exisiting policies. But the simple truth of the matter is that America today is a far better place than America 30-40 years ago, so it is only natural that there will be more 'apathy'.

I do not necessarily agree with this apathetic outlook, though, and I personally feel it is the responsibilty of a nations youth to speak out and do more about issues that are still important (if not as critical as civil rights, vietnam etc).

iraq war - first of all from the time when bush was yelling to take down saddam and his so-called WOMD i was scratching my head and thinking, "but what about bin laden? shouldnt we be concentrating on HIM?" and hooray, we dont find any WOMD at all, but what the heck, lets invade iraq anyhow.
and sure, america is bringing "democracy" to iraq. yeah, with hundreds of iraquis dying everyday. i'd rather live than vote, thank you very much.

gay marriage - i'd rather gay marry than to keep up a pretense and marry the opposite sex. gay ppl cant help being gay. its not like they said, "you know what, i think i'll be gay" besides its good for overpopulation problems too, lol. i think we'll eventually accept gay ppl, but still it'll take some time.

abortion - cmon. lets say the mom cant finance the child. and even if she can give up the baby to an adoption agency, cmon, there are millions of children already up for adoption. even if the mom wants an abortion just because she doesnt feel like having a child, fine. i sure dont want to be some poor baby that is brought into the world with a mom who doesnt even want me.

oh yeah, hooray, congress is now going to approve a bill for 91 billion to finance the iraqi war and hurricane victims. personally i think they threw the "hurricane victims" in there just to make us feel better. seeing as bush never even mentions the hurricane victims, a very, very, very, very small portion will probably go to the victims. more money for the iraqi war? what exactly are we doing there right now anyway?

Wow. I didn't know how liberal this forum was until this thread began.

How would you know if I hit puberty yet, Vicky?

Mind your own business.

I didn't read the whole thing but I agree with it.

You may call me prejudice, but I honestly don't like homosexuals in general. Men and women alike. It's unnatural. Soon, marrying our pets will be legalized. x.x

I personally believe America should focus on more pressing issues such as our ridiculous dependency on foreign oil and how it could affect our economy and national security.

Take a look at these:

I think Sen. Barack Obama is the man.
