Do We Have to Listen to Our Advisors?

I am a UT student trying to schedule summer classes in the college of natural sciences.

So do we have to listen to what our advisors say and take the course load they "suggest" when they clear our registration bars, or can we just register for whatever we want after our registration bars are cleared?

i think you can register for whatever you want after they’re cleared… the only reason you have bars is to make sure you see your advisor and are on the right track.

Nope you don’t have to listen to them. In fact, it’s probably better if you don’t. They won’t get mad at you if you don’t heed their suggestions.

You can ignore them, but if you do, be sure you are familiar with the graduation requirements for your intended major. Some of the advice they give you is intended to help you graduate in four years. Right now, you could plan out a plausible, hypothetical four-year schedule for yourself and plug it into the “Interactive Degree Audit” on the Registrar site.

Yes, you can change your schedule, just as others have told you. Sometimes things don’t work out due to classes filled or conflicts in scheduling. I change mine all the time and the adviser never says anything.

I would like to make sure you know that you are your ultimate adviser. You have an official one but ultimately you are the one responsible for your own progress. The advisers can be all over the place in the level of their advice. I have a good one, but I know of others who have received very poor advice which has cost them. Know for yourself what you need and plan accordingly.

I have Kristen Anton as my advisor in the TRAC center. but I don’t understand why you (or another student) would ignore the advice of the advisor. Personally, I would advise you to follow his or her advising to you. I tried to go my own way and ended up negatively.

xtra

I’m glad that worked out for you. It doesn’t for a lot of people.

eh, are you implying that Kristen was not a good advisor???

Oh, no no. I don’t know her. I meant that not all advisers are that good.
