Do we need a hand truck on move-in day?

Or does the school provide "help" for freshmen? That would be one less thing to lug throught the rain on Sat!

Thanks!

I think the answer is “it depends”. Some buildings have carts that you can grab. I remember grabbing a cart to move a friend into George Read. Other buildings, did not have carts available. Freshman year my daughter was in Ray St and there were no carts (maybe because there are no elevators.) We did bring a dolly with us for the refrigerator. It wasn’t very useful on the steps but did help getting it down the hallway.
There should be students there to help but if you have the room, I’d bring the hand truck.

The Arrival Survival team (students and staff) are available to help on freshman move in day to help haul stuff to your room. A hand cart can be helpful if you have one. As above, unless it’s the type with rollers on the back, it won’t help with stairs.

Moved my D in yesterday to Dickinson C 4th floor. Hand carts would not have helped because we had to walk 4 flights of stairs. First thing we set up was the fan and opened the windows. It was really hot in the small room.

abmnj1, it was particularly muggy and unpleasant moving in yesterday. I’m hoping that some of it at least was due to Irene. The sun was very very bright and hot but had to burn through lots of clouds making a lot of moisture in the air.

Moved in my daughter Thursday into Rodney C. Thank you for the a/c in Rodney as it helped during the muggy day yesterday. Makes the room a lot more pleasurable. The room may be small but it was cool!! Hand trucks would not have helped once you got to the building as you have to climb stairs, even if on the first floor. I guess the hand truck would have helped from the car to the door but that is about it. It was a long day with loads of trips back and forth to the car. I can’t even imagine what general move-in day must be like with all those people. I learned one very good thing, have your kid participate in something that allows them to check in early…it was worth it!!

Well…after a very succesful move-in yesterday to Dickinson I learned that a hand-cart is totally unnecesssary! Even with a room on the first floor, you still have to walk up one flight of stairs. So, chock that one up to experience!

I know it’s too early for all of you to be thinking about soph year, but I just moved my DD into the Independence Complex on Laird Campus last week (resort-like compared to Rodney!) and they had these huge bins on wheels (like you see at the post office) that you could use. We only needed to fill it up twice to get all her stuff from the car into her room (using the elevator).

You can just tuck this away for next year!
