Do we need to send a housing deposit now?

Can anyone give me the scoop on a housing deposit? My son is very interested in going to U of Arkansas but it will depend on how much if any scholarship money he is awarded. He is easy to please so doesn’t need anything fancy but doesn’t drink, etc. He would probably prefer the honors dorm. If he waits until he knows if he will be able to afford to go there, will it be too late to get a good room? Are the housing deposits refundable if you don’t end up attending U of Arkansas?

There is a $235 deposit required. $35 of that is non-refundable. It depends when you cancel your contract for housing on how much of the remaining $200 is refundable if you don’t end up attending. Full details here…

Hi - I would say that I the UofA is one of his top choices, then it would be a good idea to go ahead and sign the housing contract. The time when you can pick your room is assigned based on when these contracts are signed, so if you are wanting to have a better choice of where you live, you are going to want to be higher on the list.

I’ve always felt that if the school was on the list of places he’s seriously considering, it’s definitely worth it to go ahead and send in the housing deposit so he’ll get to pick his residence hall early on. The U of A doesn’t do random roommates or room assignments, but that room selection time is determined by when he contracts for housing, so the earlier he contracts, the more options he’s going to have. And, as horsesrus1 was kind enough to provide, you get the full $200 deposit (you’ll be out the $35 application fee, but to me personally, it’s more than worth it to ensure he gets to pick a place he’s happy with) back as long as he decided by March, which should be plenty of time to visit his list of schools and get most scholarship notifications back. It’s prorated after that until June.
Good luck, I know it’s starting to get into that time period where scholarship applications are due and you play the waiting game!
