in my freshman year(14yrs) I worked at a KUMON Learning Center as a math tutor. But instead of a formal contract or anything, I was paid "under-the-table" The guy said that I was too young to be officially employed or something, but im not too sure about the age limits on things like this.

so would colleges ask me to provide proof that I was employed? or do they usually just trust applicants to tell the truth about this?

It's absolutely fine, you don't need to worry about proving anything. Many, many students are employed unofficially. As long as it's a real job (and in this case it is), this is fine. (By the way, while it varies from state to state, the working age for many states is 16).

This isn't a reason to lie on your application, of course.

If we work for ourself, how do we show proof of employment? Do we mail IRA tax forms to colleges or can we just simply state that we are self employed?

You don't have to show proof, but a short reference letter from your employer might be helpful if his/her comments add something to your application.
