For those who already attend UCSD, what are your opinions of it thus far? Just curious.

Pretty good, pretty good. Nice weather year-round, always around 70ish. A definite plus! (UCSD has the best weather out of all the UCs hands down)

Academics a bit tough though, especially if you're in the more popular majors (i.e. biology) where competition is keen. Don't worry if your freshman GPA is lower than what you expect; it happens to everyone since they're still getting used to the college life and being away from home. Professors are welcoming and willing to help you if you make the effort to come to their office hours, of course.

Social life - the rumors are true, UCSD is dead during the weekends...but social life is largely what you make of it. Most students don't take advantage of the clubs and college-sponsored activities their 1st year...do so! Often your college will have outings such as BBQs and bowling nights and provide rides for you as well. Don't make the mistake of staying in the dorm ALL DAY!

Food - Ah, yes, the food. UCSD is not buffet-style, so you don't have to worry about freshman 15 like the poor saps at UCLA :) Then again, the food quality at UCSD varies wildly - one day it may be good and the other day it tastes like crap... My advice? Take a break from UCSD food once in a while and check out the eateries around San Diego. Your stomach will thank you for it!

Overall...nice school. Congrats to all those who chose UCSD...you'll have a time like no other.

So every cafeteria is restaurant style?

there is also a food court in Price Center with panda express, subway, wendy's, and some other places.

Every cafeteria is... cafeteria style. You pick what you want from the various booth like structures, and then go to the cashier to pay for it with meal points (or tritonplus, or cash). It's not all-you-can-eat, unless your parents really loaded you up with meal points or your tritonplus account or something.

oh so you don't order your own food?

You do order your own food.

I ask because I already attend, but my opinion of the place really isn't that high. It isn't just the lacking social scene, my issue has been with the people. A lot seriously lack any sort of motivation...or just ambition. I think it might be because most are from San Diego, and were reluctant to move outside of their little "bubbles". I don't know... I'm sure a lot of others have had better luck. And the academics are superior, I'm sure, if you're pursuing biology, or something-anything- in that field. But I'm an art major ( I know, impractical), and I'm seriously dissapointed in the Art program at UCSD. Very underdeveloped, and even less represented. They only had their FIRST senior art show last year- my Freshman year. And I can't believe I'm still in classes where the teachers gripe about lack of funding and interest in any sort of Art program. That was suppose to stop in High School. Now I'm paying to hear the complaints???
Eh. pretty frustrated. But the meal plan is good. Meal points are awesome. I think all schools should do it.

Yeah, going to UCSD for art might not have been the best choice. UCLA has a really good art program (at least for a non-vocational college), probably the best out of all the UCs. But UCSD is definitely not known for having a spectacular visual arts department.

The art program is very underdeveloped, and has very few "great" professors. Many people have the same concern as you in regard to the social environment and people.

Hit the nail right on the head.

It's also worth noting that the surrounding scenery is quite beautiful, and downtown San Diego is freaking awesome.
