Do you compare your grades?

My school is really intense. Like we will compare our grades to decimals. Like I know this guy whose grade in classes is like .6~1% higher than mines and I'll feel inferior. It's not just me though. I'm wondering if it's just my school that's intense.

No. I have better things to do (or at least I like to pretend I do).
And it doesn’t mean anything. Most of the people I know with good grades are dumber than a bag of hair anyway.

Ehh not so much compare as share. My group of friends likes to see how everyone is doing. It’s not competitive as we don’t rank.

I prefer to keep my grades private, but they don’t mean anything anyway. Most kids in my class do compare grades and many of them have high GPAs. But like halcyon said, these kids aren’t necessarily smart, they just know how to memorize material for a test. Memorization for a test is not an accurate indicator of academic capabilities, especially because these kids don’t know how to think for themselves.

Comparing happens a lot at my school too. It’s often down to the 0.1% for averages and 0.5% for marks in a single course. I don’t really like to participate in the sharing, but I’ve had people snatch tests and assignments out of my hand to look at the mark.

The way they GPA at my school is like:

4.xxxx/5.0000 (weighted but same unweighted out of a 4.0000)

we go 4 decimals in because the grades are so close. The top 30-40 people in sections of 10 are apprx. 0.1 apart in GPA per section. So your school isn’t that intense. But grades/assignments are done normally, but everyone is really competitive because of the way GPA works since a 98 vs 97 change it.

Grades only function as a standard for comparison. There’s literally no other point.

To show how much you’ve mastered the material?

Not really, since my school doesn’t do class rank.

Yeah, we do. In my school, the top spot difference is like less than .03 away… But between all of us we compare grades, whether percentages or out of a 4.0 scale

My community college classmates congratulate each other for getting Bs; UCLA was the same way. Granted, I’ve mostly taken classes that are known for As being rare.

Just ignore them. That kind of competition is pointless and will prove nothing in the long run. Just relax and love what you’re learning.
