Do you get extra leeway if...

You're the only person in your senior class to apply to a school? I'm from an obscure school the Bronx, and I'm applying to USC. Since my school is small, kids tend to apply to schools near NY. I don't think anyone in the history of our school (about 20 years) has ever applied there, lol. Will they take that into consideration, as opposed to several highly qualified kids from the same school applying?

If not many people from your area are applying, and don't usually apply, and you are just as well qualified as everyone else in the applicant pool, it can't hurt!

Yeah, I had the same concern. At least 2 people with better SATs and GPA (but weaker ECs) are applying to my top choice...

EC's, unless they are extraordinary [ national ranked athlete, Carnagie Hall recital, you get the drift] are not more important than GPA, and won't make up for lack of achievement in the classroom. SAT's are very important to many schools, and are generally more important than EC's.

Well, I mean in comparison to these other people, the difference in GPA and SAT scores is so marginal that ECs could be the deciding factor..
