Do you get to see ACT scores before they send them?

When you register for the ACT, you're given four choices of schools/scholarships to automatically send your scores to, free of charge. You can change your decision up to ten days after the exam. If I have them send the scores automatically, will I be able to see my see scores first? When will they send them? Would it be better to have them automatically send them without seeing them first, or wait to see them and then pay the fee later? (I'm taking the ACT on February 8th and also planning to take the SAT once or twice afterwards, depending on how I do.)

The designation of colleges in the test registration, once made, cannot be modified, and the sending of scores cannot be stopped, once that 10 day period after the exam passes. I mention that because it is possible you may see your section and composite scores before they are actually sent to the colleges but you won’t be able to stop them from being sent at that point. ACT sends scores to those colleges upon release of all your scores including the writing score. For those who get the writing score the same day as the section and composite scores are released, the scores are sent immediately. But many don’t get their writing score until the days after release of the composite and sections scores and thus it is possible for you to know scores before they are actually sent but you will be unable to stop them from being sent.

You can of course wait until after scores come out to designate any college to which to send them but that send will cost an additonal fee. The purpose of the four designations in the test registration is thus to save you money and provide four free sends, but the free ones are lost without designations made within ten days after the test date. If you are not concerned about spending the extra money, there is no reason to designate colleges in the test registration if you want to know what the scores are before determining whether to send them.

Thank you!
