Do you guys have laptops and if so do you bring them to school?

Oh. My. God. I am so excited! For an early Christmas present my dad is buying me a MacBook pro. Right now at my school I know that most kids don't have laptops, probably 50%, and even fewer bring them to classes. Mind you this is 8th grade and I was wondering if most high schoolers bring their laptops to class. Do thy act as a good tool or a distraction? Would you suggest bringing a laptop to class, or just keeping it in your locker ad brining it out or for resource, or even just solely using it at home. Tell me what you think, and thanks!:)

Well, I leave my laptop at home, but I know many of my classmates bring their laptops to school. They usually bring it to school to work on homework (because of home distractions), but some people just use it to “mess around”. I say you should bring it if you’re not afraid of theft and you actually need it to do work of some sort.

At my school we aren’t allowed to bring laptops to class. But I do have one (a Dell Inspiron) and it sucks anyways.

We can’t bring them to class. I do have one though

Well, I’m a senior in high school and I don’t think I’ve seen a single freshman or sophomore with a laptop on campus.

When you get up to junior year, I know one guy started using a laptop last year for “note-taking”, except he was mostly just playing computer games and goofing off, and that did not go over well with the teachers. At that point, a couple people would bring their laptops to school, but only on special cases like when they needed it for a presentation or something (they would plug it into the projector).

Now, as I mentioned earlier, and I’m a senior, and I know a lot more people bring laptops to school. Our school recently got a ton of netbooks, and our teachers are making a lot of use of those netbooks except a lot of people hate them (myself included) because they’re difficult to type on. So, to solve this, more people are bringing laptops and when we’re doing in-class activities that would involve using the netbooks, we pull out our own laptops.

Overall, I would say that laptops would probably be pretty distracting in the first two years of high school (especially if your high school is like mine and there’s no one else with one), maybe okay in junior/senior years. Part of it would definitely depend on yourself. I’d be concerned about leaving my laptop in a locker just because of theft, but it depends on your school too.

We can bring laptops to class and stuff, but no one does because it’s not convenient… lockers too small & too far away… too many books in backpack. iPod touch/iPhone/iPad is pretty popular though.

Yes I have a laptop and no I do not. We aren’t even allowed to, plus it would probably get stolen anyway lol

MacBrook Pros are seriously expensive (overpriced in my opinion) machines. A) It would most likely be useless to bring to school because what would you need it for? You probably won’t even be able to connect to Internet. And plus, when you would need computers, your school should already have them and provide you access. B) Would you ever want there to be a scenario in which someone steals your expensive macbook?

ya, I bring mine so I can do homework during my free periods. Though if your school doesn’t have wi-fi that you can use then having your own computer is somewhat useless

I’m a senior, and I bring my laptop to school every day. I have my calc and physics textbooks on it, and it can come in handy for doing typed homework. I sometimes end up just playing games on it, though.

I just carry it around with me everywhere - I don’t have the bigger textbooks weighing me down so it’s not too bad. Internet is easily accessible, and the chances of it being stolen are pretty low since I’m always with it. (Sometimes I forget it in a classroom, though…)

MacBooks are overpriced and not worth it - that’s my one cent.

And no, I do not bring my laptop to school. Some people do, but I don’t take notes. I would just get distracted.

No one brought laptops to school until their senior year.

I do, and I find it very useful as I can take notes almost as fast as my teacher can talk (if necessary). I can have all of my notes accessible in one place, and, most importantly, be able to SEARCH for a specific word through them. If we have an “off” day, I can work on college applications or homework.

Besides practical uses, I can chat with my friends during class, entertain myself during boring lectures, and play video games.

It really depends on the individual. Very rarely do I use my laptop to goof off, so I find it very important to my productivity. The one drawback is that it is quite heavy, especially if I have to bring the charger and mouse (I have a MacBook Pro too).

I know one person that always brings his laptop, iPad, and iPhone to school, and he uses all of them in class. He even hooks up a mouse and puts the mouse on a mousepad.

It’s pretty funny :D. Every time I glance at his desk, he has either his iPad, his laptop, or his iPhone out. Steve Jobs would be proud :).

Yes, I have a laptop.

And yes, I bring my laptop to class every day.

Mind you, this is an upper-division course in college. . .

I’m a senior in high school and most people own laptops but few use them during class, though a number of students use them during off periods.

The ones who use them during class are usually pretty technologically-oriented and Apple fans, but rarely do people need laptops during class. Some teachers get annoyed when people use laptops (though that’s mostly because they’re often doing other things on their computers), but it’s not banned or anything and it really depends on the student and the teacher.

In my high school, the students were all given laptops to bring to school! But mind you, we never really use them for educational purposes.

Almost every person in my school (11th-12th) has a laptop.

iPhones are so popular I can’t walk 3 meters without seeing one.

Thanks so much for all of your responses everyone. I will make sure to take them into account for 9th grade. Thanks again!:)

I’m a senior. I got a laptop on Black Friday last year. I didn’t bring it that much last year, but I bring it every day this year, because I take an online class in the library for one period. They have computers, but I prefer my own laptop. And I use it to pretend to pay attention in some classes… plus I stay after school a lot so I might as well do my homework.

Internet isn’t too restricted, besides facebook/youtube/etc. And I can always use my phone if I need to get on there

My school gives us laptops, and it’s required that we bring them to class every day. I’ve heard stories of students stealing their classmates’ laptops, which makes no sense seeing as how a) the laptops have tracking devices, and b) everyone already has one anyway.
