Do you guys participate in class discussions?

I zone out with thoughts about girls and Cheez its.

You guys raise your hands?

Depends on the class, but overall, I most certainly do.

To OP: I guess you haven’t been in too many classes that you’ve truly liked :P.

Depends on the discussions. If they’re boring I’ll just zone out

For the most part, yes.

If the class doesn’t particularly interest me (like economics), then I sometimes find myself actually getting caught up on work for other classes.

If the class interests me, then I usually like to participate quite a bit.

Most of the time, I can’t help myself lately. But maybe that’s just because I had some fantastic classes this year.

I just sit and listen what other people have to say.

^I’m guilty of that too.

Usually I do.

I used to participate too much in Latin III. My teacher stopped calling on me and all of my friends, so one of them started making origami frogs and we just hopped them from table to table and talked about Pliny the Elder running hither and thither.

Either a veritable feind or a complete wallflower. It depends o my mood.

Sometimes yes, other times no. It depends on what is on my mind.

^^ Yep, basically what he said.

But there are certain classes in which I just can’t be bothered to participate because my teacher sucks too much.

Sometimes I just don’t like the teacher and/or the students, so I just don’t want to have a big talk with them. So I just drift away and day dream or write a poem/story.
Other times I’m really into the class discussion either because it is a really fascinating/controversial topic or when the teacher is being narrow-minded where I defend the student the teacher refuses to see the side of.

if my respect for the teacher is low (which applies to over half my classes), whether I like the subject or not is not taken into regard; I will do the bare minimum to keep the teacher from talking to me privately outside of class about my lack of participation/attitude (they actually do that here).
if my respect for the teacher is high (which applies to the remaining under-half of my classes) and the subject feels bearable (thankfully this year all the teachers I respect teach classes I really like) I will pay attention, participate in discussions, etc.

At my school, when we were younger and didn’t have class discussions as often, “participation” was taken as either asking or answering questions. Sometimes if you’re taking a really stupid class there are no questions to ask because you know everything already, and someone always ends up answering the teachers’ questions before you. So teachers think you’re “quiet” and “shy” when it’s just that their class is awful.

Often, the teacher will ask the class a question and simply refuse to go on until someone provides the correct answer. In response, I generally answer the question to move the class along.

YES!
Class participation is highly regarded, and I just like asking questions.
Ask my economics teacher and sociology teacher for confirmation lol. :D

I participate heavily in my class, hell, I run the discussions. Then when my teachers complain about me dominating them I stop and then they get mad and want me to participate. I guess having a silent class doesn’t help.
