Do you guys still read in high school? (outside of class)

I remember in elementary schools they always pushed reading. Ex. silent reading time and weekly library visits +button rewards for every genre.
There were also those bookfairs in middle school

But now in high school...most people I know never read.

Wbu HSL? (Except AP Prep books of course hahahaha..ha)

I read a lot. Mainly History and Science Fiction (novels and short stories), historical fiction and literature, too. Lots of stuff for my various lit classes, too (Lit: Ancient-Renaissance and World Lit: Enlightenment-Present), like Candide and the Epic of Gilgamesh.

I love reading.

Not really. The only material I read outside of school is sports-related, lol.

Yeah, but I rarely read fiction anymore. I read a lot of newspaper articles and nonfiction such as memoirs and scientific books.

I never read fiction because i have way too much homework. Only thing i read is time magazine and the occasional non fiction book once every 2 months.

Yes, I read TIME and The Record. I have little time for much else (yes, right now my username is quite ironic).

I like reading magazines (New York Magazine, some fashion magazines) and The New York Times, but I don’t read books too frequently. I have read a book by Sarah Vowell and a book by Scott Carrier in the past month or two, and it was nice because they were comprised of short stories.

i try.
I read like 2 mag’s and about 3 books a month.
Not as much as I used to read.

Eh, not as much as I used to.
I used to love reading…

Bahaha. We need to bring Accelerated Reader to high school.

Yeah, I usually read a lot of travel essays. I love them; I’m currently reading Michael Crichton’s “Travels”.

A lot of people go around saying “I’d love to read, but I just don’t have the time”. I mean, not only about reading, but about everything. Honestly, it kind of ****es me off. A lot of people are short on time, but the truth is, if you really “loved” doing it, you’d find the time to do it.

^
very true.
if you have time to be online you have time to read

EXACTLY what I mean.

i still read ! only books about like teenagers in prep school ( like gossip girl ) . but only sometimes :/

I read a bunch of magazines (Wired and Popular science are the best!) but I don’t read many books anymore besides SciFi and non-fiction.

I think part of the reason why it doesnt seem like anyone reads as much is that in middle school, i could finish at least a book a week just becuse it was short. Now with longer books, I struggle to get through books faster than one a month.

Favorite authors? Any besides Asimov, Heinlein, and Clarke? I also like Zelazny. Wells, too, obviously, as one of the early greats.

I read like it’s going out of style.
Oh wait, it kind of is. And that’s depressing. I’m not saying everybody needs to read James Joyce on their Saturday nights but it’s really annoying to keep hearing that people hate reading. I won’t even pretend I don’t judge them.

I’m saying that everybody needs to read James Joyce on their Saturday nights.

Not really, but try him sometime.

So, so true.

LOL no.

My goal is to start and finish Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand sometime before college this fall, but the text in her books are always tiny and hurt my eyes.

I read online and I enjoy reading magazines and yes, I might even open a real book ever so often.
