Do you have a criminal record?

Hi all,

I'm a senior at Princeton University, and I'm writing my thesis about the barriers to college enrollment that are faced by people with criminal records.

I have done a number of interviews with university admissions officers to get a sense of how they evaluate applicants who have criminal records, but now I want to look at the other side of the story: to write about the barriers to admission from the perspective of the applicants themselves.

Have you or anyone you know applied to college with a criminal record? Do you feel that the criminal record played a role your decision of how or where to apply? Do you feel that it impacted whether you were admitted or not? If so, I would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you and to hear your story.

Feel free to post here, and I will get in contact with you. Thanks so much for your time!

While I do not have much information on the college application process of a student in my grade with a criminal record (she got caught throwing a party with lots of booze and drugs…), I do know that she has better credentials than me and got rejected by the University of Chicago (under EA), while I got deferred. However, she got accepted by Tulane. That’s all I can say on the topic…hopefully it can be of some help.

Just out of curiosity, motion, do you know for a fact she disclosed her criminal record on her application? After all, Chicago is a lot more selective than Tulane and so that could just be a function of normal admissions “stuff”.
