How many of you already have summer jobs? What are they? They're pretty scarce around here and S is being really picky what he will and will not apply to. I don't think kids can afford to be picky right now. As a college freshman, I don't think it will affect his resume too much anyway. However all of his friends already either have camp jobs or internships lined up.

Nope. People all want experience and I wasn’t allowed to get a job in high school, so I have none (we lived way out in the country & didn’t have a way to get to work other than parents…).
I’m hoping it’ll be easier once I move to the mainland, but I kind of doubt it.

I am currently working two jobs, one every evening in a restaurant, and during the day at the movie theater. Finding jobs where I live was really easy, and craigslist helped ALOT. I just applied to everywhere that I thought might possibly hire me, and now I have two jobs and am saving up for school in the fall!

I have a few jobs. Umpire for the first few months, photography for a while, and then a nanny for a few months. July is going to have absolutely NO work for me so I’m juggling a few the rest of the summer.

Because of my music interests in high school (weekly lessons an hour away from home, weekly rehearsals with multiple wind ensembles, etc.) I never had enough time to have a job, so similar to you I’m finding it hard to find work right now. I’ve had a job at the college for the past 8 months, but the working period just ended. I’ve applied to ~20 places in my home city, but it’s hard to show up for an info/training session when you live 3,100 miles away from home.

Have 1 job that starts May 2nd. I interviewed for a second with the YMCA and i’m waiting to here back. These are both just strictly summer jobs and towards the end of the summer i’m gonna look for something more stable. I’m a College Freshman by the way. And even now i’m making a list of places to appyl towards the summers end.

Yeah, I’m staying at school to continue the research I’ve been doing. Luckily, I was able to win a fellowship that will take care of the costs of living for the summer, and there should be some left over at the end. Also a college freshman by the way.

Nope, but I am looking.

I’m still looking for an internship in my field. There’s only a month of school left for me. I hope there’s still time to get a summer job… Somebody call me back!!! :(

i’m only going to start looking when i get back to my home state. i wonder if they’ll all be gone by then :/

Why don’t you look now? Some big companies will fly you out there if you get to the interview stage.

Not yet, but I’m looking…I’ve been sending out resumes and cover letters for the past couple of weeks.

I’ve had a summer job since the beginning of January. I’m working at a summer camp from June 21 to August 14…so I get 5 1/2 weeks at home before I start working, and 2 weeks at home after I stop before I go back to school.

I’m trying to find something to do for the 5 weeks I’m at home in the beginning, but finding a job for that length of time is nearly impossible. I’m looking into retail and then not telling them that I have to leave in a month…

^^^lol, not for a college freshman. i’ll just be looking locally, anyway.

My daughter has been working as a cashier in a supermarket since she was 16. She will be able to increase her hours over the summer, and she can pick up some hours whenever she is home from college on a break. (And they offer a scholarship, we are still waiting to hear!)

Do you guys work for the money, or to build your resume?

I’ve never worked in the US, only in Norway, and this isn’t meant to be condescending, but it seems horrible to be working for 7-8 bucks an hour. Doesn’t it seem meaningless, when you know you’ve only made about 50 bucks, for a whole days work? At my current job I get paid 24.50 as my base rate, and I get +50% for working after 4pm, and I get +30-50% extra for weekends, and +100% for working on holidays.

And these extra percentages are not mutually exclusive. Working on weekend-holidays, after 4pm, is therefore very lucrative.

Edit: As ridiculous as this might sound to you Americans(Haha, I’m actually an American myself), I work at a gas station.

Never able to have a job in HS because of EC time constraints, but I was granted work study as part of my FA package. I waited until second semester to get an on-campus job just to make sure I was comfortable with the workload. I’m working in the Bio department office as an assistant and I’ll be working there for the summer, too, because I’m staying on campus and taking classes.
