Rising Junior for next Fall. I don't have an internship. The stupid company wouldn't hire me, and they only paid me $150 out of the $562 I spent on travel expenses for the interview.

No. I'm a sophomore. I won't be able to get an internship this summer because I'm going to be working to help pay for tuition. And it sucks because I wanted to do an internship. I'll just have to wait for the summer after my junior year. Hopefully something else won't come up next summer (required courses or any kind of emergency) that will prohibit me from getting an internship then. I don't want to go applying for jobs without any real experience. Is there any reason why people can't do internships the summer after junior year? and does it hurt to have only 1 internship under your belt?

I have offers from Integrity Applications and ViaSat, but I plan to do an REU instead. I'm a rising senior at UCSD majoring in engineering physics.

hkapoo, I wouldn't sweat it. Also, summer after junior year is the most popular time to do internships, since students have the most experience then.

Numerous offers, have not decided yet. Industrial Engineering major, 2nd year student. The job market is tough, even for internships and co-ops, but they are out there if you work hard and nail the interviews...

I'm a junior now in Operations Research. Technology Analyst with JPM. I got this offer last fall and took it. I am abroad now, so on-campus recruiting would be difficult, even though there have been other opportunities that came along which have interested me a little more. But I this one will definitely do!

I'm an Electrical Engineering junior in Canada. I already did my first internship at Areva T&D last summer as a Technical Sales Representative (it was a good experience). I'm currently looking for another internship for this coming summer.

"I won't be able to get an internship this summer because I'm going to be working to help pay for tuition."

I actually earned quite a bit more at my internship last summer than at my old job I had the previous summer...

Interning with a large energy company, they offered me the position in November. Not too sure what I am going to be doing, but its something in their facilities engineering operations. Definitely glad I took it, as it seems like a lot of companies are cutting back on their internship programs. Good pay and I get to live in an awesome part of the country, so I am really happy about it.

If you haven't found anything, I would look at oil/oilfield services. They have a lot of money to throw around and are still doing relatively well (given the current economic climate).

Also @ hkapoo:

Most internships will pay very well compared to what you would make at a summer job. You might want to look into it, as you will be able to make a decent amount of money over the summer. If the internship didn't pay I wouldn't even consider it. Doing an internship for little or no pay is just stupid, even if it does give you another thing to put on your resume.

@ dsmo, Thanks for the input! I just applied to ExxonMobil, BP and Shell. I know it's kinda late hopefully they are still hiring for summer interns.

@MCS5280, Which energy companies did you intern? I am interested getting an internship at energy companies actually.

My status: still looking for an internship. I have applied for over 20 companies, only 2 companies contacted me so far..

My cousin is a ChemE for Amgen (Colorado) and has been for near a decade, so he obviously likes it.

I'm in Cincinnati, and P&G gets a lot of tout around here. It's near impossible to get a job with them without interning, and they hire a lot of ChemEs into Brand Management, which a good career path.

More than likely ryan, they will be hiring for next year. Not this upcoming summer. They plan a year in advance. Oil companies do like to recruit near certain geographic locations. Simply because they really don't want to drag you around and have to pay to ship you across the country. Chemical engineering huh, they actually have 15 openings for chemical engineering at the Norco Shell Refinery, too bad you don't live in the boot, lol.

Did you get any interview offers yet, it helps if you worked in some type of oil related industry previously, whether it is something as simple as doing roustabout work, or being a general helper at an oil field serivice company. I suggest you get busy. Why, you ask. Because the oil companies are going to be cutting recruiting big time with the economy on its last leg. You should be sending out apps like a mad man. Your really running out of time. There is no telling how long the economy will stay this way. It is getting bad.

i got my first internship cause of my marks and my previous volunteer experience. If you have can't get an internship i'd recommend volunteering for a prof over the summer. I did that after 1st year which helped me get an internship after 2nd year.

if by previous work experience you mean a previous internship, certainly not. How then would you be offered a first internship? I'm a sophomore without previous internship experience and after a few companies asked if I had previous internship experience, they said something along the lines of "I wasn't expecting so".

However, in this economy the reality may be driving closer to a yes answer to your question. Many companies are cutting back if not completely eliminating their internship programs for this summer.
