Class ends then, but exams and papers take up the next week. Home around Dec 14
Thank you so much! I had viewed something that said dorms close on December 10th or 11th, which seemed incredibly early to me.
Next yearās calendar says finals are from Dec 6-10th.
@bertie1 , I see it now. Thank you. So finals end December 10th and then they head home December 14th or so?
Daughter is deciding between Elon and another school. Totally opposites. Big state school honors program. One concern that has come up a few times with Elon is the difficulty of the academics. Have heard and read a few things about it being easy. She did not apply to fellows as she was not really seriously considering it at the time. After visiting (only school she could visit in person) she loved it. She is a pretty serious student and seems a little put off by the idea of it being easy. Currently she is thinking Psychology but she is truly undecided. Might end up in business. Would love any thoughts you have to share!
Iām not the OP but I am a mom of an Elon sophomore. He is a good student, high school was mostly As but several Bs. During his first year at Elon, he did say he feel like he was working less hard than most of his friends. (He is not a Fellows studentā¦he applied halfheartedly and was not selected to interview). He also felt like his high school had prepared him really well especially with writing.
As a sophomore, in harder classes, heās had some hard ones now, and online had its own challenges. Overall I think he would never say it is too easy, he would probably say itās just the right amount. Heās a Psych major. He easily met friends with the same kind of social/academic balance that he has, so that was not an issue for him.
Thanks so much for this. I realized after I posted that this was a very old thread and might not get a reply. I appreciate your perspective. My daughter also attended a rigorous school, so I think there is a chance that the coursework may not be initially super challenging. Just need to decide if that is a good or bad thing! She is waitlisted at Northwestern, but never really saw herself in a hyper competitive, grind type of school, but also wants to be appropriately challenged in college.
Old thread so I donāt know if anyone is still looking but Iāll tryā¦Iām trying to plan our drive back home from Elon (after dropping our freshman off) and thought weād stop somewhere on the way back. Problem is that I donāt know when we should leave Elon. Are there activities for freshman parents like at some other schools, or do we just drop them off and run? If there are activities are they on Aug 20 when we get there or should do parents stay for the night? TIA!
Plan on staying a couple of days. The convocation ceremony is very special.
I agree that Convocation is a must-do! It was amazing. It was the morning after freshman move in day, which is probably typical timing, and hopefully by August we will be back to ātypicalā group gatheringsā¦it is outside, which should help! After that there was an optional outdoor lunch in tents that was kind of blah. Depending on how long your drive is back, leaving after Convocation (itās probably around one hour long), or making a reservation for a restaurant lunch after it, seems about right. Convocation is so lovely and a nice end point, and I think the kids are ready to jump into campus life by then!
Is there any lesser known information about Elon that youāve learned after your child was admitted? Thanks!
If your student has any interest in business whatsoever, encourage them to join the coed business fraternity. Excellent training, networking opportunities for internships.
Interesting. Thank you!
Lesser known: I canāt find the stat, and donāt remember specifics, but I remember hearing at orientation that Elon U has a very high number of siblings that attend. To me this attests to the first studentās (and parentsā) high satisfaction with the school.
Elon also just received USNWRās #1 ranking in the nation for excellence in undergraduate teaching.
Elon was ranked #6 on the US News list for āBest Schools for Internships and Co-ops.ā
Northeastern was #1, which I can vouch for as an alum. Drexel was 2.
I realize this thread is a year old, but maybe you will see this. My daughter is seriously considering Elon and my main concern is whether the work will be too easy. Sheās a strong student, but also likes her down time so it might be that Elon is a good fit academically and personally. Your daughter sounds much like mine, so I am wondering if she went and how it is working out.
I think it depends on the major. Finance was quite demanding, my kid thought. Social work, much less so.
My son is Junior at Elon, psych major. Heās a good student but not 4.0 or super competitive. He said during his first semester at Elon that he felt very prepared from his high school, and that at times he felt like he was spending a lot less time/less stress about school than his peers. But never thought it was too easy or not challenging. As heās gotten older, I think the work has become harder. Heās had easy classes and challenging classes. Itās the right fit for this smart but pretty laid back kind of kid.
Elon is NOT a cake school. It is rated #1 by US News for Best Undergraduate Teaching. #2 is that young up and comer known as Yale. As you are probably aware, they are rated in the top 10 in several other categories, too.
I realize this is an old thread, but in case any moms pop on. How is safety? housing/dorms? food? Iāve read/heard food is not that great. That some dorms are really sketchy and others are ok? Canāt seem to get a good sense from website and though my son was accepted, we probably wonāt get to visit until April.
