Do you have time to go to frat parties, hook up, date, etc?

Just curious about the lifestyle/college experience of the typical engineering grad :)

Well yeah. Despite what you like to hear from everyone everywhere, engineers are perfectly capable of being social. I had a girlfriend for 3 of my 4 years in schools, and I still graduated with a high enough GPA to get several job offers and a full ride research assistantship offer from a top 10 program. I also went to plenty of bars and parties (though I avoided frats, it is certainly doable if you want to. I avoided them because I didn’t like them). In other words… yes, you have time, just don’t let it become your priority over schoolwork, or your grades will suffer.

I would focus on school and then party once out of college. Then you will have a solid degree and may be earning higher digits :)

Having fun and working hard don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

Ken is right. I had a blast in college. We worked hard during the week and then went out on the weekends. I tried to focus and study efficiently, so I would have time for the fun stuff.

I just had to be careful, because my dad was a prof in my department, and I didn’t want him to get wind of exactly how much fun his daughter was having!

Definitely possible to work hard / play hard!

major* 10 char

Absolutely yes. Not necessarily whenever you want but there is time.

Dude don’t sweat it. I’m an sophomore in EE at a top 3 engineering school and I was able to get drunk and party at least one night almost every week this year. Now granted you are gonna need to do your work but for the most part there is def time for partying. I would wake up around 10 or 11 and start doing at least a little work leasiurely but I was still able to chill after dinner and party at nights on the weekends. Some weeks you made need to stay in on a Saturday night to get work done but those are the exception.

Believe me after having 3 or 4 psets do on Thursday or Friday, you are gonna wanna get out and have fun Friday night and let off all that stress. We engineers work too hard to not party and have fun every now and then.

However there will be those moments that you will be ****ed off at a fuzzy for being able to go out on a Wednesday night and never having work to do.

i didn’t, but i’m not that smart

I’m pretty much busy all the time, but it’s my own fault. I overextend myself.

In general, I believe that most of my fellow CS and SE majors have plenty of free time.

You have some exceptional students who are very involved with several organizations serving as officers, partying often (not every damn night) and still are able to be at the top of their class.

Then you have those who party often and are at the top of their class but lack ECs.

I think I am somewhere in between. I party whenever I feel like it, have girlfriend (or 2 or 3), and am very involved in a few organizations and volunteer in the community. I am no where near the top of my class, but I am still “above average”- I just don’t like to study as I get sidetracked working on other projects and learning about stuff that I find more interesting than engineering. I am just doing engineering b/c it will hopefully afford me better career opportunities upon graduation compared to other majors. I am president of an engineering professional society at my school and I dare say that our national conventions are the best of any organization in the world. This past one was in Las Vegas, and happened to fall on my 21st bday. A prime example of business during the day and pleasure during the night. I networked with fortune 500 executives and then had free drinks on them later that night.

If you really are interested in engineering than you will have no problem studying, earning great grades, and still enjoying college life. If, like me, you really don’t intend to be an engineer then it will require a lot of self discipline and study skills, something I am only recently developing.

^ hey uaprophet. what do you plan on doing with your engineering degree, if you don’t want to be an engineer?
