I want to assume that you don't because you apply and are accepted under a certain major and because, as transfers, we complete pre-reqs for our majors, or do we have to declare when we get there?

At Berkeley, you “petition” to get in your major after being admitted. I’m fairly certain all of the other UCs admit you directly to your major.

Thanks @Cayton. It’s good to know.
I can’t imagine going to uni and then having them tell me that I can’t be in the program that I signed up to be in…

I only applied as an anthro major (no alternative major) but I wonder how it works if you apply with an alternate major. Either way it isn’t something I have to worry about, but I am curious to know.

^Hmm, @AnthroFlo Berkeley doesn’t have the option to apply with an alternative major. Unless you were referring to a different UC?

@AnthroFlo

The alternate major option is mostly useless for the top UCs in the system(UCLA and UC Berkeley), but the other UCs may admit you to your listed alternate major if they can’t admit you to your first-choice major.

UCLA does consider alternate major admission if you happen to be a member of their TAP program, though.

Where did you come up with that?

At Berkeley, like all UCs, there is no such thing as applying as an undeclared transfer. You have to apply to a major. Just as at some other UCs, for some majors you may be accepted in what is called pre-major status and are not officially accepted into the major until you complete all the prerequisites.

edit: go to the page <a href=“Academic Programs & Majors - Office of Undergraduate Admissions”>http://admissions.berkeley.edu/majors and scroll down the list. Each college has a note that says “Undeclared: available only to freshmen”

I know you can’t apply as an undeclared transfer, but I read that you still have to petition for some reason after being admitted.

But perhaps I’m wrong.

That part is right, but its to move from pre-major to major status. To take one example, the popular major Econ
I know this is a bit confusing. You apply as an Econ major, you are judged by your GPA and prerequisites against other applicants that want Econ, but you’re not actually in the major. That’s just part of the fun of UC…

At many campuses they do this for the more popular majors. Same rules for frosh, BTW. Want to be a Geology major? Fill out a piece of paper to change to that major as a frosh and they welcome you with open arms. Want to be in Econ? Fill out a form and then you are pre-Econ; you don’t get into the major until you complete all the prerequisites with a specified GPA.

@ocnative
I was referring to the other UCs I applied to :p

@mikemac

I see. Thanks.

@Cayton - Berkeley’s policy depends on which college you apply to… L&S (where econ and BA Comp Sci are) admits everyone, including transfers, undeclared. Then you complete your remaining pre-reqs and declare the major. If your major is impacted there’s a couple extra rules, you’ll need a good GPA. If you don’t get into your proposed major, usually you go for an alternate one instead… I know popular alternates for Econ are Poli Econ and Env. Econ. Anyways, that’s specific to Letters and Science. If you’re in CoE (like EECS) you apply directly to your major and don’t need to worry about petitioning/declaring, and I assume the other colleges are the same way.

@failure622

Sorry if this is a stupid question but if I got into Cal my major resides within the college of L&S so, according to your info, I would be admitted as an undeclared student in the college of L&S… but you also said that one could declare their major after all pre-reqs are done and I am transferring in IGETC certified with my pre-reqs done, does that mean I can try to declare as soon as I get there?
