I am continually a B student in math, and the subject is obviously not my strong-suit. However, I have A-'s to A+'s in my other subjects, but it is always freaking math (despite my conscious effort to improve my grade) that brings me down.

Any comments? Advice? I am getting a tutor....so hopefully my grade will get better. I'm a sophomore and last year I got an 85 in math. Right now, it feels like I'll be in the same boat as last year, maybe even lower than an 85...I don't know..

Help, please!!

thanks,

Well, I got a B in the second semester in Honors Precal in 10th grade (and it was like a B of 89%, which kinda sucks how close it was to an A; my school doesn’t show letter signs on transcripts).

And I used to have a B in both semesters of Calculus BC, but getting a 5 on the AP test, my teacher changed the B’s to A’s (he boosts his the grades of his students who get a 4 or 5 on the AP test).

And I got B’s in both semesters of AP English Lang and Comp and APUSH.

However, other than the B in 2nd semester of Precal and the B’s in AP English and APUSH, the rest of my transcript shows A’s.

But if you want to get into Stanford, I guess you should also focus on getting really awesome SAT scores and writing really awesome essays…

do you go to Stanford?

Stanford has said that the typical range of accepted students is 3.6 to 4.0; I’ve read that the average is 3.8-3.9. The common data set gives stats on the % students in different GPA ranges; see section C11 here:

I had a few Bs in high school. I think most accepted students had some Bs.

laxgirl, you’re exactly like me! I’ve gotten all As in my classes except for math. This year, though, I have an A in calculus. Whoopee. But anyways, I do have a couple of Bs sprinkled on my transcript (I can thank junior year for those).

I’ve recently applied to Stanford, so we’ll see how the process goes. :-)

Ohmigosh. I am so grateful to meet all these relatable people. When I entered high school, I stopped being strong in math, and it’s frustrating because that’s the only thing causing my B’s as well. I have high A’s in all my other classes. I too, also want to go to Stanford. Though I’m only a sophomore, I cannot offer you primary advice. However, an alumni from my school was accepted into Stanford for her internships.
A couple of B’s will not keep you out of Stanford. Admission is based on so much more than just GPA and test scores. Show a passion for something and excel at it or really dedicate yourself to it. Additionally, you must be able to articulate how that passion has shaped and impacted you, and perhaps those around you.
