Ok, so I've never quite understood this. I hear people all the time saying "geez I got a D.. looks like I gotta retake the course".. but do they actually HAVE to retake it? I've always thought only an F counts as a fail and that you only have to retake it if you get an F. Sure you can still retake a D to improve your grade so your GPA will be better, but it's not required right? You still get the graduation credit for it. You only don't get the credit for an F. Or does this only apply to breadths and not to major prereqs? Please enlighten me.

i would just retake it cuz grad school don't like it (specially med schools)
it's just like how they didn't allow us to get lower than a C in hs to get accepted to berkeley

but i heard that even if you retake it, your D still stays on your transcript along with your newer grade

Well yea if you're going somewhere grades matter after college, then you should retake it. But if you don't really care in the end about one grade in one class, then why bother spending another semester doing it, especially if didn't like the class and don't feel confident that you're gonna get a significantly better grade anyways the second time around.

then i guess its up to you, what's your major btw?

I'm doing Computer Science and Economics. But I'm not in any kind of situation like this though. I was just wondering because I was talking to two of my engineer friends the other day. One had gotten a C- in Math and the other had gotten a D+. The one that had gotten a D+ was complaining about how he's retaking Math during the summer right now and was bitter that the other friend had scraped by with a C-. He only cares about if his overall GPA is above a 3.0, and it already is, even with that D+ in Math. So I was just curious to see if he actually HAS to be retaking it right now.

A D is sufficient and does not require the course to be retaken, unless the department imposes some sort of minimum grade for required courses.

i was under the impression that a D is failing, in all the colleges.

no, only F is failing.

well, i know that in science classes (and I think engineering too), a D is failing, and you must retake the class.

hmm maybe if someone could provide a link?

From the College of Letters & Sciences:

What constitutes a failing grade?

and

Am I doing a student a favor by giving them an F instead of a D?

Hmm.. so this is what I understand: You get graduation credit for D's and none for F's. But according to L+S, a D will get you grad credit but it isn't enough to satisfy the 7 breadths, AC, or R+C requirement. So you have to get a C- or above in those requirements. But I've seen no information regarding having to get a C- or above in major requirements. I've scanned both L+S pages and COE pages, and all I see is that you just need to maintain a 2.0. So this means if you're in EECS and get a D in CS61A you can go straight to CS61B, and if you're MCB and get a D in Chem3A you can go straight to Chem3B? But if you get a D in R1A you gotta retake R1A? Is this correct?

Hmm yeah, I only see "C- or above is needed" for breadth requirements and AC requirement. For major prereqs I only see "overall 2.0+" and graduation I only see "120 units completed" so I guess for all other classes besides those requirements you can get a D (or even an F) and not retake it. The only thing is for some classes you'll need a C- or above from another class (Bio 1A needs C- or above in Chem 3A, for example).
