Do you have to take a language

just curious--engineering majors (not sure if it is different between colleges) do you have to take a language at Cornell? I thought that I read somewhere that you have to take a certain amount of classes from like 6 categories, and language was one of them, which would kind of being saying that you could avoid the language.

anyone know?

as an engineering major, you can avoid a language requirement. you need 6 classes from 3 of the 6 categories. and then 2 classes must be at the 200 level or higher. so for me, I have 3 classes in historical analysis, 2 in literature and the arts and 1 in social and behavioral analysis. You can fill these requirements with ap credit too

oooooh goodness. I am so incredibly happy right now. :) thank you

it's hard for engineers to fit languages in their schedules also.

sweet. I just found the info on cornell's engineering site...

Cornell has a rich curriculum in the humanities, arts, and social sciences, enabling every engineering student to obtain a truly liberal education. A minimum of six courses (totaling at least 18 credits) is required, and should be chosen with as much care and foresight as courses from technical areas.

The six courses must be chosen from at least three of the following six groups.
At least two courses must be at the 200 level or higher.

Group 1. Cultural Analysis (CA)
Group 2. Historical Analysis (HA)
Group 3. Literature and the Arts (LA)
Group 4. Knowledge, Cognition, and Moral Reasoning (KCM)
Group 5. Social and Behavioral Analysis (SBA)
Group 6. Foreign Languages (not literature courses)
