Do you have to take calculus?

I'm planning to major in business administration and was curious as to whether or not I will need to take calculus in college.

I'm currently taking AP Calc in high school and have no interest in it at all so I'm planning to drop it. But before I do, I wanted to see if I will need to take it in college.

It depends on the school. My university required business students to take something called Calculus for Social Scientists (at a minimum). It was kind of like an abbreviated version of AP Calc. Anyways, if you got a 3 on AP Calc exam, you didn't have to take this class.

I guess I should contact the admission for the school's that I'm looking at to find out.

Most top-ranked undergraduate business schools will require Calculus and possibly a Statistics course as well.

For example, this is the case at the following schools:
Wharton (Univ of Penn)
MIT
Virginia
USC
NYU
Indiana
Michigan
Boston College
UC Berkeley, and
Wisconsin

(Note: some of these schools require that the statistics course be taken on business subjects, some don't--same with the calculus course)

USC requires a Calculus and Statistics course.

Anyone know about ASU?

FAQ - Current Undergraduate - School of Accountancy - W. P. Carey School of Business

Yes, you have to calculus (or some abbreviated form of it). It's part of the prereqs to enter business school. That's the case for every AACSB school as I recall.

Calculus is NOT required by every AACSB school. I know that my son graduated from Towson University, which is AACSB accredited, and didn't take Calculus. He did, however, have to take two courses in statistics. My other son graduate from Fairleigh Dickenson in accounting and also didn't have to take calculus. He did, however, have to take three courses in statistics.

Calculus is irrelevant for accounting. Statistics, however, is very important in auditing.

I'm not looking to go into accounting. I'm looking to go into business administration/management.

Does not make a difference. Calculus, algebra, statistics or some combination are prerequisites to upper-level business courses.

My school is AASCB accredited and we were required to take a calculus class (and pre-calc if you didn't score high enough on the placement tests) as well as two statistics courses. It's required for all BS in business administration majors here, only those getting a BA in economics instead of a BSBA in economics aren't required.

next time phrase the question : "will i be privileged enough to have the opportunity to learn calculus?"

I know I had to take Business Calculus, Precalculus Algebra, and Statistics. But it depends on what Business School u want to attend. Some schools require u to take certain math courses and Some do not.

Some undergraduate schools with a business major will say yes, you have to take calc, and others will say not required. I can not imagine a school with a business admin. major (also known under various other names, i.e. business/economics, management, etc.) not requiring at least one statistics course and at least pre-calc.

If you are considering going for your MBA, even if well into the future, you should have calculas. Most reputable schools will require it

It is a good thing to have on your transcript. It is not interesting? Welcome to the real world, everything won't be. But taking it will most likely benefit you in the future, even if you do not see it now.
