Do you know if you can take classes without pre-reqs?

I’m in an interesting situation.

I’m a Aerospace engineering transfer student with has already done upper division Aerospace classes at SJSU. Due to all my units, I have finished all of the Freshman/Sophomore classes, (with the exception of the cal poly specific classes like Intro to AE/Intro to Design) as well as all the Junior/Senior GE’s with the exception of one class. (GE C4 category), and some Junior level AERO classes that will transfer over.

at this flowchart (a bit older than the 2013-2015 agenda that is current)

https://aero.calpoly.edu/media/uploads/files/2011_2013_Flowchart1.pdf

Two classes I need, AERO301, and AERO300 are only offered in the spring. They are prerequisites for the rest of the Junior/Senior coursework.

When I went to SOAR, I could only register for 10 units because there is no other classes I can take! That’s not even a full-time student. I can’t take the upper-division Junior coursework because I’m missing those two classes.

I don’t know what I’m going to do when winter registration comes, because there will be nothing I can take that will progress me through the Aerospace degree. I guess I could fill my course load with a bunch of 100-level classes and pad my GPA, but I would rather do coursework and finish my degree sooner.

I’m essentially waiting for until spring quarter taking 100-level not even as a full-time student because I can’t sign up for upper division classes due to those 2 classes.

it’s a really interesting flowchart. I don’t see how anybody can transfer and finish in two years due to the scheduling of those two classes. I wasn’t the only person in this situation when I went to SOAR.

Talk to the professors as early as you can. Like right when PASS opens up, or try to find out who will be teaching the class even earlier (for winter quarter) and pop into their office at office hours or something to explain your situation. They usually try to understand and accommodate. If you’re trying to get into a class this quarter, try emailing the professor now and basically just say everything you said here. Generally, letting someone in who does not meet the pre-requisite is at the discretion of the professor. They can override it by giving you a permission number. Sometimes you may have to crash the class still though, depending on the teacher and the demand for the class. But if you’re persistent, you’ll have a decent shot a getting in.
