Do you know of anyone that has ever been accepted RD with a 3.7 UW GPA?

I know that GPA isn't the only deciding factor, but I was just curious

Yes … in the over 5000+ applications I have personally reviewed in my 5+ years working in Johns Hopkins admission I know of students admitted with a 3.7 (A-) overall GPA. Shockingly, I even know of students admitted with less than such a GPA I.

If you do a bit of research you will learn the Hopkins admissions process is quite holistic and comprehensive, and the *numbers *only tell one part of the story.

I couldn’t have asked for a better answer. Thanks Daniel!

i was admitted with a 3.73 UW gpa. but then again, i don’t think Hopkins looks at freshman grades so my UW gpa is actually higher. And I also got straight A’s for senior mid-year reports, so that again changes things. Even with a 3.7 UW, there are countless ways to improve your application even in the few months before the deadline.

I had a lower GPA than that and I was accepted.

So getting in with a 3.6 is not unheard of?

seriously man?? jesus

yeah i got in with a 3.4

The point is:

1) numbers alone won’t get you in
2) if you are bringing something to the table that the admissions committee is looking for, they’ll compromise on other factors to get what they want.

the question is to what extent do admissions committee’s compromise or weight different factor’s. You can be denied with a 4.0 and admitted with a 3.0 if you are compelling to the admissions committee.

If you like the school apply. GL

I had like 3.5 GPA
and 2140 SAT
and I got in

Wow. That makes me feel better (no offense). I have a. 3.6 GPA and a 29 ACT (which I’m hoping to bring to a 31/32. My SAT is terrible, but I hope to majorly impove it in October. I’ll probaly apply RD unless I absolutely fall in love with it when I tour. Then I may consider ED.

I also think my EC’s are pretty solid as will bey reccomendations.

I attended a info session at JHU and they said that they unweight your gpa and recalculate it. What courses are included when they recalculate your gpa-for example, are technology courses included, or only the basic core courses? I am assuming all courses are given the same weight. Is this correct?

i’m pretty sure it’s all academic courses.

weightlifting, team sports and sports/physical fitness courses aren’t included.

all courses are given the same weight. 4 = A 3 = B etc.
it’s calculated on a 4.0 basis.

hope i helped.

Simple to say, the individual grades in the class and the difficulty of the class is more important the GPA, each school calculates different and some don’t even calculate really.
As long as you take challenging course and do well in them, then you have little to worry about.

Best of luck

Yeah, me! 10 char!

My High School GPA was around a 3.4 and I got waitlisted. Of course getting waitlisted is less than getting accepted but a 3.4 is also a lot less than a 3.7.

I’ll only be taking 2 AP classes for my high school career. I’ll be taking 10 honors classes in total for my high school career. Would this kill my chances?

Depends, how many AP classes does your school offer and did you take all (or almost all) honors classes available for your classes? Also how well did you do in them?

Wow this is making me feel so much better about my chances… (no offense, sorry!)
I have a 3.59 unweighted!

yeah, it happens, but you definitely have to make up for it somewhere on your application.

laura, i hope you are not missing the point… as admissions dan stated, typically accepted students will have 3.8+ and high SAT/ACT but you CAN get in if you wow the adcom in other ways. the acceptance rate is at/around or under 25%, and im betting the average applicant has much higher than a 3.6 UW. you still have to be realistic about your chances

and that goes to people with 4.0s too. anytime you are dealing with selective schools, it means high stats are the norm and you’re going to have to provide something to impress the adcom and let them know you’d be a good fit in order to get accepted. a handful of my high school friends got into hopkins out of about 20-25 who applied. we all (as far as i knew, anyways) had great numbers (it was basically an honors school with a 25% acceptance rate to get into) but our ECs, essays and interests were what separated us, i think. fit is very important.
