I've only visited a couple of times but the roads seemed narrow & busy, the
sidewalks narrow with cars & buses passing close to your head, and we never
saw the student gyms or intramural sports areas for the non-ACC athletes
attending UVA. Please give your input on the campus layout & maybe also the
intramural program at UVA...especially for basketball, soccer and ultra-frizbee.
The main restaurant area was hard to get to because you had to cross a busy
main road also....is that a big issue for the students or just old ladies like me? ha :)

People get hit every year because they assume cars will stop and they don’t. If you don’t get into that mindset you’ll be fine. It’s a state school in a college down with a hospital, it is as good as I could ever expect for those conditions.

The roads near classes (the ones you go on the most) are also closed off to everything except official UVA buses/etc during school hours, so that makes a difference, too. The main road (29) and the road near the “restaurants”/corner (university) is never restricted, though, so that is always busy with traffic. They’re building that new bridge for the south lawn project so that students do not have to cross the busy road near the hospital anymore.

I played intramural tag football with my dorm and that was a lot of fun, you just play on the field near the Cav Inn and it is just fine.

Do you mean The Corner? University Avenue/Main Street is the road that you cross.

I have joked that we should ask for a video of a student negotiating a cross walk as part of the admission process because some don’t look both ways before going into a cross walk. That being said, when driving, I’ve found that cars almost crawl up The Corner because of all the cross walks. It’s a well traveled street, but not a dangerous one.

We’re pretty lucky to have a true Main Street in Charlottesville. Until recently, all of the stores on The Corner and the Downtown Mall were “mom and pop” stores. The chains have moved in, but they don’t seem to dominate the way they do in my shopping districts.

slyly raises hand. BUT, Dean J, you’ll be proud to know that I alwaayyss look both ways before hopping across the train tracks. Even when I’m in another, slightly hindered state of mind at 2am, I always look. A human can win against a car, but man vs train…train always wins. You know us engineers, we know our physics of momentum
Roads? Yeah, I’ve almost been run over on the Corner numerous times. But at the same time, you can tell students/UVa people apart from townies/visitors because we always stop for people when we see them coming up to the crosswalk. I really like that sense of community…

Anyways, Grounds can seem bustling, especially during Days of the Lawn because there are people everryywhere. Also, people on my tours always seem to say “my, Grounds are huge! I’m lost!”. Universities, especially ones like UVa with 5 main undergrad schools, need the space. But I live the farthest possible from the e-school, and I’m a 15min walk. To main grounds, its 5-10. The walks are easy, there’s a great bus/trolley system, and unless you’re really aloof, it’s hard to get hit by a car. The hustle and bustle is pretty nice sometimes, I love people watching at Bodos. But I also feel like there’s thousands more people on Grounds right now because of DOTL, and it might have felt overwhelming to you.

Sports: lots of IMs, all seasons. We have a great frisbee team too, I have a few friends on it and they love it. And, they’re really good I’ve played soccer IM both 7v7 teams and 5v5 teams, great both times. Never been a basketball fan, but they play two seasons worth, and there’s always IM-sponsered shootouts and 3-point tournies. Sports here are superb, as are the gyms/athletic facilities. Don’t let our football team fool you ;)

Thanks for the info.
