do you make connections at harvard?

I heard about the Master's Teas at Yale, and am very interested in meeting in-the-spotlight people as well as experts in my field of focus and other fields. Also, I heard masters have parties like once a month in their mansion of the residential college. Is there anything like this at Harvard outside of the research community? (interested in practical medicine and music, etc, etc, etc.)

I've heard Harvard tends to be a little anti-social compared to other colleges. This doesn't mean they're unfriendly, just really busy. One of my friends who graduated from Harvard says he's had the same group of friends all four years. But the name Harvard itself is a connection of sorts, especially if you get into a graduate school such as Harvard Law or Med.

The Institute of Politics at Harvard brings in top notch politicians to speak fairly regularly (past speakers have included Kofi Annan & the Dalai Lama). Many Harvard professors are also in the spotlight. The most important connections might be the ones made with peers, however.

And you view this as part of being anti-social? IMHO, you're only experiencing a pale shadow of what college can be if you don't have a tight group of friends who stick with you all the way through. My college friends were my family; I can't imagine my life without them.

Cheers Hanna! Also, most if not all houses have weekly master's teas, which sound very similar to those at Yale. Politicians, authors, filmmakers etc. visit all the time.

I'll also second JustForgetMe on making friends with peers. Probably the most important form of networking one will do at an elite school. And the pool of students at Harvard is of a higher quality than anywhere else...
