Do you make connections?

My GC told me that one of the most important parts of college admissions is creating rapport with the admissions officers. Has anyone tried this and been met with success? For me, after that initial e-mail, I have no idea what to say!

I know they emphasize this a lot, but I really don’t think this works. Your admissions officers handle too many applications to remember names and faces. In additional, they’re too busy to make small talk with every applicant who wants admission, and it would probably just annoy them. I mean maybe at schools where the applicant pool is not very large, this would work, but schools that get 10,000+ applicants? Forget it.

Obviously if you have a question, you should definitely be courteous–you never know what they’ll remember plus it’s the right thing to do. But don’t bombard the admissions office of your dream school with questions just to establish a “connection” if the question can be found on the admissions site. That is just obnoxious.

Nevertheless, I sent my regional officer a thank you card after the process was over and my application was in, which I think is appropriate. JMO though.
