Do you NEED a backup major when applying for a capped major?

I'm asking this because everyone has been telling me that all you need is to fulfill the gpa requirements in prereqs to get accepted into a capped major, for me, is L S CS. But let's say if I have one or 2 prereqs left to complete in one more semester, and so far, I have well above a 3.0 GPA and I'm sure that it'll stay that way for the last one or two prereqs. Do I need to take Math 53 and declare applied math as my backup (or take other classes to declare another major as a backup)?

How many semesters have you completed? You need to declare before your fifth semester (or second semester if you came in as a transfer).

I’m actually an incoming freshman. I’m just planning ahead, not making a definitive schedule, but just thinking under which circumstances I should take what classes. If I don’t need to take math 53 to get applied math as a backup (since I believe that’s the only prereq for applied math not in CS prereqs), I can use that slot to take an elective that I enjoy.

By semester 2 or 3, you should have a good idea of whether you are doing well in CS and math courses to have a good idea of whether you can, and want to, declare the CS major, applied math major, both, or neither. You can then plan semester 3 and 4 to declare the appropriate major on time.

I too am a CAP student. DO NOT experiment. Fulfill your CAP and that is it. Of course take things that will count towards your degree plan but as long as your major is in one of the colleges you have automatic admission to, you’re good. I applied as a neuroscience major at UT but UTSA doesn’t have it as a major but it doesn’t matter as I’ll just apply to it at UT.

Lol, what?
“Capped major” at Berkeley does not equal “Coordinated Admission Program” at UT Austin.

LMAO! I was so not paying attention! Sorry everyone. Sorry for being, “That guy."
