Do you need a recommendation from a counselor?

It says I can't submit the common app until I invite a counselor, but my school isn't doing counselor recommendations anymore. In School Forms, it only says that I need two recommendations, but it doesn't say it has to be from a counselor. What's going on, here?

Are you a US student? I’m surprised your counselor is not doing recommendations at all. Can you invite another school official (like a teacher) to provide the counselor recommendation? This is unusual because at many schools the school counselor also provides the school profile and information about you relative to your peers (rank, type of school, how many APs offers, your courseload, etc.).

p.s. you also need to look at the specific school to see what their requirements are. Each school is not the same. The common app tries to show you (red/yellow/green status) how much of your application is complete for each school. If one of your schools requires a counselor rec and a teacher rec (or counselor plus 2 teachers) the common app won’t let you submit until you have all those pieces complete.

Hey Koda - Just a few additional points to what SnowflakeVT has offered. Many counselors do not write letters of recommendation for their students, but they will still complete and submit the required School Report on their behalf. I’m guessing that’s the case for you. But the School Report will include critical information like your transcript and other information about your standing as a student. If your counselor doesn’t submit a letter of recommendation the colleges to which you are applying will rely on your teachers’ letters of recommendation to learn more about you as a student and individual.

Also, just one point of clarification about what you need to do before you submit - your counselor and teachers only have to be invited and assigned before you submit. Their forms do not have to be submitted before you can submit the Common App Online.

Hope that helps. Good luck!
