Do you need an associates degree?

If you plan to transfer to the top UCs do you need an associates degree & would that help or hurt your chances? Additionnally would having one be absolutely useless or does it help in life AT ALL?

I didn’t complete my associate’s (especially since I would be taking classes I didn’t need and didn’t count towards my major, since my major at the UC I’m attending isn’t offered at my CC) when I transferred and it didn’t hurt my chances. As for your second question, depends on what you get an associate’s degree in.

They don’t care one way or the other. Actually they never ask if you have one.

If you finish IGETC; that itself, qualifies you to some sort of degree. But some people aren’t willing to take a requires PE class To qualify for an aa

Really? Its just an additional PE class?

For me it was just a PE class, because I already had the other requirements completed by using that to complete IGETC. PE was super easy, I took a weight lifting class and all I had to do was drop in once a week, sign my name, and leave–I got PE credit without actually doing it and only takes me 10 minute per week to do so

This, may sound like a weird question, but do you get graded in that PE class and does that grade effect GPA. I would HATE for the reason for me getting rejected from Berkeley or LA be simply because I did badly in PE lol

On the other hand, you might have gotten stronger if you actually lifted weights while you were there.

^^sure when it’s crowded and everything is taken. Besides I have a gym membership

^ yeah I agree, forced exercise at a specific time and place is not verry fun. Im more of a nogger so I like to explore new areas and blast my earphones. Obviously, I wouldnt be able to do that when im in PE lol. I used to actually be kind of chubby, because as an immigrant I never knew how to play football, baseball, or kickball the sports tgat my PE instructors obnoxiously assumed every student knew. That and because of my bad eye sight (ive had to wear glasses since I was in kindergarden) my depth perception and coordination has always been a bit off. As a culmination of these, I loathed PE. The only circumstance I would be able to take it is if it doesnt effect gpa. That would be my uktimate nightmare xD

Yeah it’s basically just a PE class (depends on your field of study though). I took step aerobics and our grade was just based on how many classes you missed. Easiest A ever.

I went into my CC saying how stupid and pointless an AA was, but I actually ended up getting it and going to graduation in May. Not only is celebrating fun, but you never know what is going to happen. Maybe you won’t finish your B.A or have to work before completing it. If you take that extra class, you could at least prove on a resume that you have done something with yourself since high school. Plus, my AA is in a different field than I intend to get my B.A in, so it shows diversity and what not.

Ill probably have to.work during the summer “respites”, along with hopefully research… so it might come in handy, but trust me I would rather.die than be a college drop out! Especially since ill be pursuing a PhD.

I plan on gettting a legit degree frame and hang it from my wall. For good times and memory of my time at a cc

You could always try to get an AS degree. I received a AS from my CC without taking a PE class.

As to your question of “should” you get one well I personally believe that having something to show for your time at a CC is a “good” thing. You will be asked to fill out any degrees received on your UC application. I really don’t see how it could’ve hurt my application in any way to show that I received a AS in chemistry.

Haha lawlking, wouldnt you want to forget the fact that you went to a CC? I know I would… Well, other than paying student loans ;)

I’d frame my UCLA scholarship recognition award before I even think about framing any of my AAs…yes, I have more than one -___-

Haha, that is amazing! Congratulations.

I chose not to get one. Partially because my CC doesn’t offer an AA in psychology (and “liberal arts with an emphasis in the behavioral sciences” isn’t quite right), but also because I saw no reason to waste time and money on the PE classes I would still need. Besides, who needs an AA degree? I’d much rather stop thinking of myself as a CC student and just focus on the Berkeley degree I’ll have in two years. :)

^yeah, good point I really just want to get my gen ed. and prerequisites done but I was wondering whether you need one to transfer there. Honestly, I dont see the point in the AA degree itself if you know you’ll finish your bachelors and hope to get a masters & PhD especially if its in the same field.

The only reason that I took a PE class was to get an extra unit over the summer. I actually didnt even know I was eligible for an AA till I got an email from PCC informing me that I was on track to do so provided that I passed all my classes this past spring. They also informed me that I was one class short of recieving a 3rd AA and that I could take the necessary Bio class over the summer in order to do so…thanks, but no thanks.
