Senior year I’m taking trigonometry. I don’t have calc or precalc. Is this going to DQ from BU?

one bump for answer

they look for at least pre-calc

but is pre-calc required and by not having it am I totally up the creek?

my junior year I took advanced algebra and trig 200 and senior year I took discrete math 200....and I still got into the college of arts and sciences w/ $5000 a year

I think you're ok as long as your SAT math score isn't abominably low

although I should say....we don't specifically have a 'Pre-Calc' class in our school, and I think adv. algebra and trig was kind of like it (it's a senior course that's supposed to lead to calculus in college). but I would say trigonometry has many of the same concepts

you're not totally up the creek as long as your other courses are strong & if not, then your grades are often. it's kind of like if you don't have one thing, you have to have something else to make up for it.

If your school offers pre-calc BU will expect that you take it. Unless you skipped pre-cal and went straight to multivariable calc (or some equally advanced form of math) OR unless your school doesn't offer it, you should take it.

When we visited BU before my D's jr. year, they told us at least pre-calc was required. Based on that, my D called her counselor immediately and changed her schedule for pre-calc jr. year. She also changed her science plans to include physics and an AP science based on what admissions told her that day.

It was worth it, since she just got accepted! (I think taking those courses is good for college prep, no matter what school you are applying to.)

2forcollege, what did admissions say about science? My S was accepted in 2005 with no AP science. Then again, he is majoring in political science, so maybe BU didn't care. He had plenty of other AP courses, including calculus.

DS (a music major) did not have precalc (he's a senior at BU so this is old news). When he applied, it was clear that if a student did NOT have precalc their GC needed to address this in their letter of recommendation. DS took economics and statistics...much more valuable to a music major than precalc. GC put that in her letter. He got accepted....but that was in 2003.

I think they wanted physics and an AP level science if your school offered it. Her school offers so many, that it probably wouldn't look good if she didn't take at least one AP.

She also had a situation they didn't like with biology honors (she didn't take it at her high school), so she took AP Biology to make up for it.

So my advice is to talk to someone in admissions before signing up for next year's classes. I think they were very helpful.

I don't think the AP science thing is a big deal as long as it doesn't have anything to do with your major because I had several chances to take an AP Science and didn't and I still got in. I did take physics, but I know a kid that didn't and still got in.
