I mean, how important is it really? I'm in a TRIPLE dorm at Hopkins Gregory... since they have tons of computers over there, what's the big deal about taking a desktop (and no I won't buy a laptop) Apparently over 80% of students take one there. Any advice??

I mainly would use a computer to write papers, thats it...

Well, depending on your major and what kind of classes you take, you would be using a computer for more than writing papers. Many classes have their own websites, require you to do homework online or turn in work online. Email and facebook are like life-links around here.

Yes, there's a computer lab in every dorm. You can even check out laptops to use in the Undergrad library for 2 hours at a time. I, personally, need a laptop for my major, not to mention it's my primary source of communication (more so than my phone, anyway).

If you think you are gonna walk all the way down to the computer lab every time you want to do homework, check grades, check facebook, write papers, or check your email, you will probably just end up using one of your roommates' laptops. you can take a desktop, nobody really takes laptops to classes, but lots of people take them to the library, which you might find yourself doing to study where its quiet.

I get like 20 emails a day, so I check my email before/between/after classes/meals/whatever... lots of email checking and responding and all that.

so yes, you need to take your computer to campus.

Well thats the thing, if anything I would take an entire desktop to my dorm, which feels like wayy too much hassle! There's only a 10% chance I'd get a laptop and thats only if my parents are willing to buy it for me.

By the way, I'm in the school of Engineering... Civil to be exact. Maybe this will even force me to do my work faster? Is that a decent hope?

who cares how many people have their own computers. the point is, if you can fit a desktop in your car with a flat panel than take it. laptops are entirely optional and have some benefits and cons to them. there are some things that you cannot do on the schools library computers that you could do on your own desktop.

Yeah, it can fit in the car, but can it fit in the dorm? Keep in mind I have a triple.. it just feels like it would be too crowded and uncomfortable. Unless that's not the case... has anyone here checked out Hopkins hall, cause I haven't ;_;

Is it okay to not have your laptop for the first couple of weeks? My laptop will be arriving after I leave for college. My dad refuses to mail it to my dorm because he says it might not be safe. So, can I live without my laptop until labor day weekend? Or will I need it for class because they all start assigning papers and etc.?

Visali, I don't know much about how much computers are used at the campus, but previously many people said that people don't bring laptops to class very often, and are, in fact, a luxury.

I think you'll do fine without it for a few weeks. :P

Lol why would it be unsafe to mail it? I get stuff mailed in all the time since I am too lazy to shop at a B&M store. Im also a huge geek so I buy/sell computer stuff on Ebay alot. Anyway Iv never had anything lost and the stuff that goes in and out probably adds up to $6k.

My laptop will also arrive late, on the 28th! Those Dell bastards said 3-5 days, when it's been 3 WEEKS since I ordered it. Ugh. Off to the computer labs for me...
