do you need to take the act?

Does U. Chicago require it?

As far as I know, the UChicago requires either the SAT (discounting writing) or the ACT (again, discounting the writing portion).

I took both. I scored a 2220 on my SAT, but I scored only a 27 on my ACT. Will I hurt my chances if I only submit my SAT score?

I doubt it; Chicago (or Ted O’Neill, at least) cares little for standardized test scores. (Which makes sense, but still makes a sad puppy out of my 36)

no, I do not need to send my ACT scores.

and neither do you.

And you shouldn’t.

I’d just send whichever is better. I don’t think UChicago gets involved in the whole SAT vs. ACT merits war that envelops the Ivies. I submitted both, but my scores were relatively equivalent, and in retrospect, I don’t think I would have needed to sent my SAT scores.

S1 only took and sent ACT scores. Chicago was fine with that. S2 has only taken the SAT, and has no intention of taking the ACT. At Chicago it just doesn’t really matter, or it least it didn’t under O’Neill.

Like idad’s S2, I also took and sent only the SAT. I’m attending this fall–so it couldn’t have hurt much, if at all. Report your best scores; if that means sending an ACT with strong scores in one area but weak ones otherwise, plus an SAT with the reverse, then maybe that’s a good idea. But as others have posited, I don’t think Chicago will get too hung up in them one way or another.

I took and sent only the SAT (2240–800, 800, 640 math) and was admitted EA for '13. Remember, under the old dean (it changes in July, I think), the SAT was looked at on a 1600-point scale at Chicago, so look at that that way. I think anything from low 1400s/high 1300s on up, out of 1600 (reading and math), is par for the course at Chicago.

I know nothing about ACTs, so I can’t comment on your scores, but Chicago only requires one or the other, so submit what makes you look the best.
