No, seriously? I have never seen a question that has required me to use one, but most "prep books" say that it's useful. So spending so much $$$ on it, really worth it?

Not unless you’re going to take AP calculus in the future.

No, i bought one and didn’t even use it on the SATII Math 2

For the SAT? No.

But you really don’t have one? How do you get through school? Students in my Algebra II or Precalculus classes would be greatly handicapped without one.

Thanks guys. That’s what I was thinking.
And no, I don’t need a calculator for calculus or pre-calculus. My country’s board doesn’t permit it for exams.

Oh, are you from a place where a graphing calculator isn’t routinely used in schools?

No, don’t buy one for the SAT.

you dont need one for the SATI or the SAT Math II ( as long as you know how to sketch basic conic’s like parabola’s)

It may be helpful on some SAT II math problems, but it isn’t worth spending 90 bucks on one. Borrow one from a friend.

Quadratic Solvers come in handy. As do graphing equations to find intersections.

You probably need it in the future, but it’s not necessary for the SAT I (although if used right, it can help you solve problems faster).

what’s the best calculator that I can get that would be really helpful for calculus (HS and university) and is allowed for the SAT II?

thnx

^The TI-89 would be good for college if you plan on going into higher, higher math. If you plan on stopping with Calculus II (roughly the same as AP Calculus BC), a TI-83 or 84 would suffice. I have both, and they’re both great.

TI-84+ is fine.

if you’re doing fine, don’t get one. It takes time to know the calculator well so dont bother buying one.

even my math courses in college do not allow calculators during exams so dont get one.

^Calculators remain much less important in college math courses than they are in high school courses.

As far as the regular SAT goes, no question will require a calculator, much less a graphing calculator. However, for some questions a regular calculator may be helpful. I don’t think I’ve seen many questions (if any) on which a graphing calculator was useful but someone may be able to come up with an example ( I’d be interested to see it :)

you never know when you will need it later
