I was thinking about move in day, and was wondering if it was just me...I mean, doesn't it seem really simple?

All you really need are your appliances ( fridge, microwave, computer, etc), linens, toiletries, and clothing, right?

Sure, all the details within these categories will add up to alot...but why does it seem like everyone's making such a hueg deal about what to bring to college? And if i am mistaken, then please correct me because I'm off to college in August!

alot of people are just anxious/excited about heading off to college...so they're asking every question imaginable lol...but it's some good advice on here though

When you realize that you are packing up your entire life, there ends up being a lot of things that you never realize you use that consistently...until they aren't there.

The best way to make sure you get everything is to start writing your list now, in June, of things you use each day.

also, dorm rooms do not come decorated. You have been accustomed to living in furnished decorated rooms your entire life. If you don't bring some **** from home with you to decorate (or buy it there) you room will be depressing.

Also, yes, you can say "bring clothes" but unlike a short vacation, when you go away for several months to school, you need clothing for pretty much any occasion. Then of course, there's the issue of balancing the ratio between how much clothing you bring, and how often you need/want to do laundry.

yea..there's alotta **** you need to bring. Especially if you're like me, a southern belle planning on going to the most north schools ever. I need alotta stuff i've never had before, like snow boots..lol

fridge and microwave come in VERY handy... ! and computer is really a must, it's hard to live without one.

honestly, in all likelihood you probably will bring things you don't need! but then you'll learn what you truly use, and what you don't... as well as what clothes you wear all the time and what just sits there :)

A lot of schools won't allow microwaves in the dorms--any kind of heating apparatus: hot plates, toaters, toaster ovens, and stuff of that ilk. A fridge, however, is a good idea for if you ever have leftovers, or to have some water or soda in your room because since colleges have a captive audience, sometimes they jack up the price: $1.30 for a bottle of soda from the vending machine, $1.50 for juices.

My school allows microwaves below 700 watts but doesn't allow hot plates, toasters, toaster ovens, etc. I really wish we could have a toaster, I want something to cook waffles in! You can have a george forman grill though, I guess because it doesn't have open coils like toasters/hot plates do...
my school does have microfridges but only in two of the buildings. I had to buy my own microwave and minifridge. I like it though, because I can just bring it back this year too.

Snowboots depends on the campus. On mine, plowing is not their strong suit. Granted I'm on the shorter side, but there were some (big) storms where they couldn't keep up and I was walking on sidewalks knee deep in snow. So depending on where the school is, boots are important
And yes, you really do need a lot. I was amazed at how much crap I needed for school.

microwave is definitely not required. Fridge def not required either, but there were times I wish I had one, as opposed to the microwave. The other thing is that so many kids around you will have fridges/waves that once you make friends, you can mooch off them, and use their microwaves or keep stuff in their fridge.

Hell yes. I had drinks on each floor of my dorm last semester.

it seems like u may need alot more if ur comin from far away. im my case, if i do end up going to one of my top three choices, i would need to buy stuff when i get there cuz i wont be able to fit all that stuff on a plane uknow. so u do need it.

Honestly, it really depends. Some people can live without TV, some people can't. The same goes for the fridge, microwave, and stuff like that. I brought a van full of of stuff my freshman year and then brought more during breaks, but I have several friends who could fit everything in a backpack, a suitcase, and a dufflebag. I brought so much that I never used, so I will bring a lot less next year. I think for freshman you can either bring everything you could possibly ever need and then see what you use and what you don't for future years, or you could bring fewer items and then buy stuff as you needed.
