Do you really save money by moving outside of the campus?

Try a Co-op. Cheaper than dorms and off campus apartments. Keep in mind that there are a lot of really old and not well-maintained buildings in Berkeley. Make sure your apartment or house has good maintenance/service. If you want your own room, be prepared to pay about $700.00 or more a month off campus. As far as Telegraph goes, the apartment my son had there was old, but clean. A one bedroom used to cost around $1200.00 per month. Two bedrooms went for $1600.00. Parking was offered as available for an extra $100.00 per month.

The point is that you don’t need to eat out every day. I highly recommend against it, in fact. If you go to a grocery store, you can usually buy plenty of food for yourself for about $50 a week. Seriously.

And it’s not hard to find rooms around campus for <$750 – when I was looking, I found plenty from $400-$800. It is hard to find a private apartment for less than $1000.

You are right, Batman; the price is with the standard meal plan. Better than I thought, but still more expensive than living off campus. Not to mention that if you live off-campus you will probably have your own room and get to eat what you want to instead of what the cafeteria makes. Plus you won’t miss out because you woke up late. :p

bump. any more info anyone would like to contribute?

For some people getting large amounts of aid like me, I think that living in the dorms compared to an average apartment costs about the same if not a little less. I receive federal aid/loans, and additional university grants to cover the rest. Once I move out, my budget is less 4000 dollars, and I am pretty sure they will take away the university grant first.

hmm… oh rly ? im getting like 10k in grants the semester… should i see a huge drop next year?

Well, generally at least girls are better about this. What one needs is one or two guys who really can’t stand bad hygiene and filth, and I happen to be one of those. I live with 4 others, and another one of them is the same way. We don’t really let these situations go out of hand.

Live on campus maybe for one year, and you’ll probably be confident in yourself enough to take care of an apartment.

Also, in our situation myself and most of us have our own room, and those who don’t basically don’t care to. I do really have my own space. But if we want company, it is there!

I think $20 a day is a ton! I live in a 1-bd apartment ($670) and spend about $45 a week on groceries total…including stuff like shampoo, soap, and all that jazz. And I eat well, fruits, veggies, sandwhiches, cereal, steaks (though low end…obviously) etc. Just buy stuff on sale.

^
you’re too healthy!

That’s awesome! I’m sorry I don’t like to eat a lot. LOLOL.

Thanks for the comment Smallz! You’re an inspiration! LOLOL. :D
