just as the title says. I really don’t think AdComs would waste their time on a sight like this, but who knows?
We do have admission officers who are members of this site.
Some are officially part of CC and post on their respective college forums. UChicago & MIT are a couple forums that come to mind, but I know there are more. I doubt they bother with the Chances forum. :). But they are free to roam, of course.
I think it is a mixed bag to have them here. Sometimes they can clear up questions immediately, which is good. But I also think they can stifle honest criticism of their schools and the ability of applicants to have a safe place to ask tough or super specific questions (can reveal who you are to admissions if you give too much info). And the party line they give (what they say their schools do or care about) doesn’t always match how the school behaves – but their presence can stifle that conversation.
Chance threads? Yeah, these underpaid AdComms, when they’re not sifting through tens of thousands of applications in their daytime job, spend their free time at night in the CC Chances Forum trying matching up screen names to real applicants.
chance me threads? Heck, no sane person should be looking at them. They’re the detritus of this site. The entire forum was created as an online hair net so those idiotic posts would stop cluttering the other forums.
“Chance Me” threads can be helpful if we spot an applicant who is only listing reach schools, because we can give constructive help by advising them to apply to matches and a safety.
But in terms of chancing them, we don’t really know. The best we can do is estimate and hope that it will be used constructively by them.
And I imagine if I were an Adcomm and I spent all day evaluating applicants, I wouldn’t be doing the exact same thing in my free time without being paid. The only occupations that might be different, IMO, would be something in the arts or sporting world.
I really don’t get why kids post on the chances forum. I suspect it is more a way to find similar kids to communicate with, to vent, and discuss the ups and downs of the process. I guess it is useful for kids who are feeling insecure but actually have good stats. On the other hand, there are too many kids who brag about theirs and just want confirmation of how great they are. I rarely look at it, usually becasue I accidentally clicked on it. To answer your question though, I seriously doubt they waste their time with the chances forum.
I know some who do watch the college specific forums, without being registered on CC as reps. And especially their results threads on decision day.
Kids don’t usually even mention the possible major on chance threads. I occasionally look at them because there are some good kids who aren’t just looking for rah rah blind support.
UVA also comes to mind.
If a poster on College Confidential is revealing too much info, s/he has only him/herself to blame. However, unless the poster says, “My name is XXX and I go to YYY HS,” a college official on this site is unlikely to try to figure out the poster’s identity.
Anyway, back to the original question. IMO, AO’s have better things to do with their time than look through chance threads. I don’t like to look through chance threads, and I work here.
For me, the best chance me threads are the ones where the poster asks others to chance him/her and then promises to “chance back”. That is absolutely precious. It’s like me meeting someone random on the street and saying, "Hey I have these symptoms, Can you tell me what the chances are that I have “xx” disease. BTW, if you help me out, you can tell me some of your symptoms and I will tell you what disease you might have.
It is adorable though that they are willing to help out, so why rain on their parade?
I think the point of chance threads is for kids to try out humblebragging. And then it seems like many responses are possibly insecure kids telling them how marginal they are, I assume to make them feel better about themselves. “You did surgery? Big deal. What kind??”
I saw an exchange somewhere where someone said something like “I had a rough year 10th grade. But I plan to explain it. It was a horrible situation. My cousin was murdered by my other cousin. (I think in front of her?)” To which someone responded something like “Big deal. People get murdered all the time.”
^That is surely the first time Chance threads have ever been called adorable.
Probably not. Not gonna lie, I don’t see chance threads as useful. CC users don’t know what AOs look at, and you can’t divulge your whole application on a thread. So most times, people who respond to ‘chance threads’ just glance at the SAT, GPA and ECs and say “you’re fine”.
@VeryLuckyParent this is so true. Someone who doesn’t know what AOs are looking for and makes a chance thread is going to alternatively play the role of an AO. It doesn’t really make sense haha
